Public support for Barack Obama is slipping on the major issues likely to define his presidency, particularly healthcare reform with approval dropping below 50% for the first time.

According to a Washington Post poll published today, voter confidence in Obama on other key issues, such as the economy, unemployment and the huge budget deficit, is also slipping.

The president's overall rating remains strong with 59% of those polled generally approving of his leadership. Nonetheless that is six points down on a month ago.

The growing political fight over healthcare reform appears to be taking its toll on Obama's ratings as support for him on the issue fell to 49% from 57% in April. Opposition to his proposals rose sharply, from 29% to 44%, as accusations that the president's plan for comprehensive access to health insurance amounts to socialism that will lead to the government choosing people's doctors, more taxes and increase the national deficit have had an impact. However, health reform is still strongly backed among Democrats and those earning less than $50,000 a year.

There has also been a major shift since Obama took office in January against the government attempting to spend its way out of recession. At the beginning of the year, a little more than half of voters supported federal spending to revive the economy. That has fallen sharply, to 40%, while a significant majority now believes it is more important to avoid increasing the budget deficit.

The increased spending has also undermined Obama's attempts to portray himself as a new type of Democratic president. Four months ago, two out of three Americans saw him as careful with the public's money and a break from the old-style tax and spend Democrats. Now, the numbers are much closer with only 52% having such confidence.

I am of the belief system that the country that touts it self as the "richest" on the planet, has people choosing between loosing their home or having a needed operation is sickening.

With that being said, I think they rushing this thing. I'm no economist, but when the CBO comes out and says that what they pushing will blow this thing out of the water, then that is need to slow down. Why this has to been done in 2 weeks, Obama has four years (rhetorical question). I know he's pushing because if he doesn't get it done now, then it's salt for him on this issue.

Agree, he has a lot of great ideas but he is doing too much too soon. I'm no Poly Sci major but IMHO he could always bring that up in year two of his presidency when the economic crisis has slowed down enough. But like I said...I'm no Poly Sci or Economist.

People are starting to open their eyes and stop drinking the cool aid. Obama need to stop running for re-election and focus on the economy . I don’t want to hear about BUSH he is out of office . Barry asked people to vote for change . Now its his turn to do the people job and stop looking in the past.
WHO IS TRYING TO HOLD UP HEALTH CARE REFORM?

Yes, OBAMA is GOVERNING while the REPUBLICANS CONTINUE to say NO to EVERYTHING.

1.5 trillion dollars they want to spend on universal healthcare but don’t know how to fund it . I am sick child and currently don’t have healthcare but yuh don’t see me looking for handouts . MoFo’s need to get up off their ass and not depend on the government.
OVER 6 MILLION PEOPLE got LAID OFF, thus LIKELY has no HEALTHCARE, what do you say to those PEOPLE?

Moreover, how is it that over 40 MILLION PEOPLE do not have HEALTHCARE?

The REPUBLICANS AGREE that the SYSTEM is BROKEN, yet they're STANDING in the WAY of OBAMA and the DEMS FIXING the PROBLEM.

Is there a REPUBLICAN PLAN to FIX HEALTHCARE??

If there is ONE, FEEL FREE to SHARE.
OBAMA will FIX the HEALTHCARE SYSTEM....NO SHOUTING from the LOUD MOUTHS at FOX NEWS and the "NO" REPUBLICAN can STOP it.

YUHHHHHHHHHHHH SEEEEEEEEEEEE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeee

They are trying to get a lot done before mid-term elections . In the slim chance republicans take the house they got some of their agenda done . What is messed up about all of this some congress men and women are not reading the bills they vote for because its rush .

Poor people in need of housing and congress wants to spend millions to buy land for wild horses . People going hungry and the spending millions for studies on how pigs smell . I can go on all day
I think the not reading a bill isn't anything new. It's a shame they don't read, but again nothing new.

I'm sick and tired of the polls. Its like every week there is a new poll. This is a tough issue to deal with especially given the fragile state of the economy. Obama's point is that you can't really fix the economy if you don't fix healthcare because as it is currently instituted it is a real financial drain on people and businesses....but then you cannot ignore the deficit.

Just last week republicans blacked a bill someone was trying to rush through . How the ass you can attach a civil right bill to a military spending bill
VERY EASY!!

The REPUBLICANS have BEEN PASSING BILLS like that for DECADES.

For those up in arms just ask yourself how much is being spent on the people them war a year. Or for an international space station that they will let burn to the ground not a full 5 years after being fully functional in 2010..

Then you may realize where some priorities were being placed all this time.. :mda:
