Ok there are quite a few Caribbean authors, many of whom some of you who went to school in the Caribbean might have read. Who are your favorites or who are thouse you've read and may not have liked. Trying to up my reading and support of Caribbean works.

Some I've read are:

Merle Collins
Michael Anthony (Loved his Greens days by the River and others from that series)
V S Naipaul (disappointed with his views of his homeland)
Derek Walcott
Jamaica Kincaid

.....

I don't care too much for V.S. Naipaul, however, I do enjoy his books. Also I am a fan of Samuel Selvon and Michael Anthony.

Most of the ones you just listed.

Michael Anthony( Green days is one ah mi fav. books Shelly how could u?

V.S. Naipaul( Books are good)

There's another author but I won't even try to spell his name. I would just mess it up horribly.

I want to read more WEst Indian novels but the library doesn't have that wide of a slection.

I agree with your opinion of Naipaul.

Suggestion: George Lamming's In the Castle of My Skin...good book.

Cool that's a name I was trying to remember. I read that one it was a very good read. Have you also read his Of Age and Innocence I think?

This also brings to mind a couple others

Jean Rhys - Wide Sargasso Sea (don't remember where she is from exactly)

My Bones and my Flute (Guyanese/Surinamese author of Dutch origin I believe - can't recall his name)

SweetKadina

CanTiguan
Colin Channer out of Jamaica is good. Read Waiting in Vain.
Also Edwidge Danticat.
There is a book that you should be able to find pretty easy called Blue Latitudes. It's a group of excerpts from Caribbean authors I never heard of. And many of the stories are excellent.

Earl Lovelace is the best caribbean author I have read.

V.S. Naipaul is a good writer but I dislike his views.

Shiav Naipaul is good too

I believe she's from Dominica but moved back to England when she was in her teens. That's why she always wrote about not fitting in etc.

We were discussing her life and impacton Caribbean women writers a bit in Lit. class .

Yeah...Jeah Rhys was born in Dominica (couldn't move 'back' to England...she is Dominican, so maybe she 'moved' there?)

Wide Sargasso Sea is very good. Earl Lovelace as someone mentioned is also very good as is Edwige Danticat (even though I'm not a huge fan yet).
