Why dont black families eat veggies?

My sister went over to her friends house for Thanksgiving- she is from the islands (it doesent matter which one) and she was surprised to see that the only veggie she had was rice and peas and she had collar greens/ham?

Besides stress and other factors, why do we ignore the benefits of a balanced diet?
I have a questoin, when you were growing up did your family include veggies in meals?

For instance, if you had pumpkin rice or fungi with okra that counts. I would love to know.

Thanks

i never like certain greens as we would say back home as a child. However now I consume veggies, even the stuff I never liked as a child.

I think that it is an overstatement to say that black families don't eat veggies. I think that the difference is that black people incorporate their vegetables into the food rather than serving them whole or raw like I've seen a lot of caucasion people do. I know growing up my mother made a lot of vegetables. Whether it be callaloo, peas and rice, curry potato and channa, etc.... She would put vegetables in the meat when she cooked. The vegetables might not have been as visible but they definitely were there.

Very good question? I hate veggies till this day. Until a couple of years ago I took on this temp position between grad school/classes. I was always to busy and if it did not taste or look like chicken or beef it was not getting into my mouth.
Anyway, the owner and I became a great team because every veggie I hated growing up he decided to make several products that taste/look like meet, save me time and also be good for my health as well.:) :cool2 Anyway, to make a long story short these are some of the products that I try to incorporate into my diet today. It works for me and maybe it can also work for some of the other non-veggie people who are like me. It helped with the transition. If you happen to see this product at your local grocery store and you decide to try it/like it or not please feel free to PM me your feedbacks/suggestions www.veggiepatch.com :)

Is it realy wise to visit a home on one day (ie. Thanksgiving) and assume that this set of people don't have a balanced diet with veggies? Just wondering about that. There are many ways to cook veggies though some methods preserve more of its nutrients than others.

I make sure and eat my veggies every chance I get. It may not be every day but I do make sure and get my veggies in.

when I was growing up; My mother used to beat me to eat veggies......It was a must,.........

A lot of black Americans do not eat veggies and some West Indians living up here don't eat them either because they let that culture take over them..........falling into the "junk food" category.

Wow. You shocked me with that one B&S.

Anyhow . . . as far as I know most Caribbean people cook with a lot of vegetables so I think it is a major generalization to say that BLack people on a whole don't incorporate vegetables in thier diet. I agree with DouglaT on this one, in regards to how the vegetablesare prepared in contrast to caucasions.
