A well dressed man with a gun or a half naked man with a stick?

This is a question that we dealt with in my European history class. The topic was European expansionism and at this time of course, the Europeans wanted to conquer the Indians. Their number one justification was to "civilize" the people....So I think to myslef as, I am watching Bush's speach tonight and he just made a comment to justify the war in Iraq and of course what did he say, he felt that we were civilizing them...(among other things).

so what do u think of the question now, are we really civilizing them, hell, are we more civilized as a bunch of bullies with big ass guns???

As for your question hotgirl, the answer always depends on who's telling the story, who's answering the question...which is typically the self-proclaimed well-dressed colonizer.

But in my opinion, whoever wants to take the word of a mass murderer as to what it means to be civilized....hey, go right ahead.

Who defines civilization ...or is that one culture that attempts to dictate to another that thier society is better or one to be assimilated to? As you know.. the American civilization had it's genisis in Europe and subsequently after setting foot in America, they soon resorted to 'civilizing' the Indians and we all know that such resulted in taking over their territory and ultimately as some form of penance provided the indians pieces of land (reservations)....could you fathom that any other country would dear to invade or come to America and dictate it's policies or society is supreme and the one to conform....

hotgirl, i got an iraqi fren, and he protrayed his country has a group of nationalists royal to their country and their leader (religious, political, or family) so they will fight against anyone who does not match with their views.. and they stick together like de buttom of a shoe to glue..

he for example had some bad blood with a couple korean guys (a year old) he called an arabic fren.. in about 15mins dey were bout 50 cars.. approx 100 arabs.. more than half of them he did not kno.. ready and willing to beat the $hit out the korean guys.. which they did.. which is civil to them.. cause once you do not disrespect them they do not disrespect you.. and setting up a government that has no street respect.. to rule a nation.. that is disrespect.. not speaking admirably about their religious leaders that is disrespect..

they may hate each other.. but they got one common enemy (socio 101.. us vs them)

The only difference in 2004 is that we fight each other with bullets, missiles, shells, and threaten each other with global destruction...10 times over. And the complex burecratic and social structure behind modern socities that make things more complex and complicated, but essentiallly things remain the same. It always has and always will.

"Civilized", since colonialization always meant "Democratized". According to the West, the best government is a democracy, which apparently allows citizens with a lot of rights (or the impression of them) and free economic development (exploitation). However, if my study of governments serves me correctly, no government on this earth truly is a democracy (all citizens do not have a direct say in government, which is the point of democracy). What we have in the west is a more burecratic system where we trust the bureaucracy and the chosen few to deal with everything while we toddle on with our lives. So the idea is to repeat this everywhere else in the world that does not have it, with the only people posing any serious resistance is China.

listening to replays of Bush's speech on the news now, i realize how many time Bush referes to America as "the civilized"...it just irks me...cause who the hell are we to deem others uncivilized?
