I'm reading these posts and I can't help but chuckle because it s obvious that many people, through no fault of theirs, are aware that the origins of rap and hip-hop actually lie in such Caribbean traditions as Jamaican reggae and Trinidad rhapso.

Most of the elements of rap and hip-hop, such as the use of stage names, rapping lyrics on existing melodies, mixing with two turntables was being done in Jamaica since the 60's and much of it diffused to the States when such Jamaicans as DJ Kool Herc went there.

This is not to diminish the African-American input into rap/hip-hop, but just to show that such "colllaboration" is nothing new. In any event, all of these traditions came from the griot/djali oral tradition.
