Orthodox Jews

I don't know very much about them but what I do know (or what I think I know) is that the females are raised to be married, have children, take care of the children and be housewives (correct me if I am wrong).

What I would like to know is what happens when (if it does happen) an Orthodox Jewish girl wants to be educated beyond high school, doesn't want to get married, doesn't want to have a load of children or wants to be a career-oriented woman? How would her family feel about that? Will she be banished from her family or looked down upon?

I'm just curious because I live in an area with a lot of Jews.

Only someone really in that situation could answer that questions. But you should really see the move, My Big Fat Greek Wedding!! I just watched it last night and not only was it entertaining it also delt with some of the issues that you are raising right now..

first of all histroically there is no such thing as an orthadox jew..at least not in this modern day context.

you need to read this BOOK:

"WE THE BLACK JEWS"
by: Prof. Yosef A. A. ben Jochannan

the you'l get a more acurate historical view of judism.

these so-called jews today are not real jews!!!

respect

Most of what you say is true but most of these women have inded gone to college and a lot of them have higher education than the men, I know lawyers and docters who stay home with their kids while their hushand work. I guess the rest will depend on the family and the community. never thought about that. Good question.

When I say "Orthodox Jew" referring to the Jews that wear the black suits, black trench coats, the women that shave their heads, wear wigs and long skirts. The ones that follow the strict religious life, so to speak. I'm not sure if "Orthodox Jew" is the correct term. Maybe "Hassidic Jew"?

Are you talking about just Jewish women in general or the Orthodox/Hassidic (I don't know what the correct term is) Jewish women? The ones who wear the wigs and long skirts. I know many Jewish women that are just Jewish by birth but don't really follow the strict religion that are college educated, have careers, etc...

Dougla the 'correct' terminology is "Orthodox" (as opposed to Secular) Judaism, among the Orthodox are the Hasidim of Crown Heights, who are but one sect. There's another sect in Williamsburg (whose name escapes me) who can be differentiated from Hasidic Jews by the hats worn by the men (a disc-shaped, flat furry something).

As for the issues with the women you've hit it on the head, it's very complicated and the women indeed have a subdued voice. They sit separately from the men in the synagogues and from the outside seem to me (I used to live on President and Albany) to really submit themselves to their husbands. Their's is indeed a very patriarchal world and as you'd expect with other such societies ambition in women (as you've described) is frowned upon, to the extent that it might detract from her responsibilities in the home.

Also of interest is the fact that close to 100% of the adult women cut their hair short and wear wigs. This has to do with the ritual baths that the women are supposed to take in which the entire body must be covered. Because the hair floats, it is thought easier to simply cut it off rather than risk even one strand going uncovered.

They must have real tall women.

I don't know much about the jewish women when it comes to the consequences of not conforming the practices of the religion but I've seen documentaries where homish (not sure of spelling) women have been segregated or banished by their family as well as the community. They are given a period during their teens to 'wild out' sex, drinking, partying every night, you name it to see what it feels like. Then if they choose any way of life (even if it is to have a career) other than to stay home and take care of the kids, they are no longer acknowledged by their family or even the community.
