A list containing the names of 77 Tobagonian men who were allegedly given the HIV virus from a 20-year-old woman is currently circulating in Tobago, causing panic to dozens of men who are now rushing to have themselves tested.

The woman has, however, refuted the claims.

The list first appeared in Tobago a month ago and has circulated throughout the island at such a rate, health officials are now advising young persons to conduct HIV tests to determine their status.

Scarborough police say they are in possession of the list but have not decided exactly how to treat the matter, since some of the names on the list were written in different handwritings.

The 20-year-old mother, who is now residing in Morvant, Trinidad, worked at a popular hotel in Crown Point before leaving the island in July.

She says she heard about the list before she left Tobago but only saw it when she traveled to the sister isle on Saturday. She said she was surprised to see the number of people on the list and is unaware why the rumours were spreading.

“I had more male friends than female friends and I did have a few boyfriends, but certainly nothing even as close to the number of people on that list. Some people are saying that it was a family member who was spreading it, but I know my family and they would never do something like that,” she said.

The woman said the only link she could make to the rumours was through a former landlord in Tobago, whose sexual advances she resisted. She said she was not allowing the rumours to destroy her life, but admitted she has been hurt by the talk.

“I went to Tobago on Saturday and people were saying wasn’t she supposed to be dead? Even my grandmother told me not to come to Tobago because she didn’t like what was happening. My next step is to take up the matter with the police to have it investigated, because it has put a strain on my social life,” she said.

The young woman said she did an HIV test three weeks ago and will get the results within a week.

At least one senior official at the Tobago Regional Health Authority admitted he thought the woman had died, saying this caused even more panic on the island.

Police and health officials say even if the list was determined as a hoax, it would serve as a wake-up call for Tobago, where statistics show HIV infections are alarmingly high.

The circulation of the list has caused several persons to rush to test themselves for HIV, in a situation reminiscent of the Simona Flocker scandal about five years ago, where a tourist to the island died leaving a list behind of persons she had infected with the deadly virus.

had a Guyanese man called him self the iceman that did this too, he hurtfull part of it is that he targetted young school girls. Well they aren't the first and wouldn't be the last. He told a journalist and the printed the article in one of the papers that he had a vendetta to share the various cause his woman give it to him and never told him.

One good thing comming out of it is dat ppl getting tested,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, to bad it had to happen this way but tobago does have a high rate of infection........................hell the whole caribbean have a terrible rate of infection and that is the ones who were tested so think of all the other ones running around and not knowing they have it.............................
