Zimbabwe: March a National Statement
The Herald (Harare) EDITORIAL 30 November 2007 Posted to the web 30 November 2007 Harare Zimbabweans from all walks of life retrace their footprints to Zimbabwe Grounds, the hallowed grounds in Highfield that resounded to the message that the trajectory of independent Zimbabwe was unstoppable in perpetuity. That was the morning of January 27, 1980, when the grounds hosted an estimated one million Zimbabweans who had gathered to welcome President Mugabe and the victorious cadres who ended 90-years of colonial domination during the 14-year war of attrition against the Smith regime. The objective of today's march and gathering - under the aegis of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association - is to express solidarity with President Mugabe's candidature for next year's presidential elections, and to affirm faith in his leadership. Those are the stated objectives, but the march is much bigger than just expressing solidarity with the President. It is about affirming faith in the ideals and values of the struggle, which Cde Mugabe embodies, defends tenaciously and is being attacked for by subversive forces at home and abroad. It is about affirming faith in his leadership since 1980 and everything he stands for. The march could not have come at any better time, and in a better venue, as a message has to be sent out to all unrepentant Rhodies that Rhodesia died with Ian Smith. A message has to go to Britain and her rightwing allies, that Zimbabwe will never be a colony again, and most importantly the message has to go to all doubting Thomases, that Zanu-PF - as led by President Mugabe - is the vanguard party, and the Government it leads has the legitimate mandate of progressive Zimbabweans. Relevant Links Southern Africa Zimbabwe The march is also providential, coming as it does, just a week before the EU-Africa Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, as the message has to go to the EU that the illegal sanctions predicated on claims that the Government lacks legitimacy are hogwash as Zimbabweans are solidly behind their chosen leaders. More so, the message has to go to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown who has chosen to go into exile on his own continent simply because he wants his proxies to be in power here, that Zimbabweans say no to proxy regimes. Most importantly, after revelations by former British military chief, Lord Charles Guthrie that Britain contemplated invading Zimbabwe and that the plans may still be on the table, London must get the message that the people who defeated colonialism are still alive and are as determined as ever before to defend the gains of the revolution. So this march is not just about President Mugabe's candidacy, but is a powerful statement on the efficacy and vibrancy of the revolution. It is a national statement that the ideals live on, and that Zimbabweans are ready to defend them to the bitter end, if need be. |
