The lateses danger in Haiti

For the past several months there have been a rash of kidnappings. It's gone from bad to worse. A friend of my moms just told her last month, during the evening--a car drove by his home several times, finally it turned off it's lights and parked right on the corner of his yard. For hours the car just stood their. Their home is pretty secluded-so any car parked in the area would be coming to their home since their neighbors are kinda far out. So my mom's friend left the house and went into hiding cause the trend is for the burglers/kidnappers to kill the males and take the women and children. Of course it was very dangerous for him to have left his house and leave his wife but staying could have meant death....luckily after hours later, the car just left without any trouble. But it's still hard to sleep at night knowing that these people could come back at any time, and with this croked government, there is really no one to report this to.

They basically took all their money out the house to a safer place (not even banks are that safe now)---but by mere fact of their home (the size, archetecture, ect)...they seem pretty wealthy and thefore making them easy targets.

It is really sad to see what's happening back there. Now ppl definately don't want to go to Haiti even to visit their family. My parents postponed their trip for this summer and I wouldn't blame them....the gov't is in shambles and the people have no where to turn.

it really is sad!!! i went to haiti a couple years back and i loved it and i've been wanting to go back ever since but shyt is CRAZY. i was supposed to go this summer but do to all the kidnappings my mom didn't want to risk it! especially since the ppl we would stay with are extremely wealthy and prominent in the community!! my uncle in haiti has a lot of money...and the summer after i left haiti his daughter got kidnapped...and when they caught the man it was his wife's brother in law

My husbands mother is still there and I worry about it as well. But I dare not bring it up because I know that he worries about it too. We just got off the phone with her. She is in good spirits but went to church today and there was no one there. Every one is hiding in their homes. I feel bad about the situation, but she refuses to leave, she is simply not giving up on her country. The government is not helping the people at all. She said that going to the market is a stress. Every thing has doubled in price and there is a real shortage of food.

Its not good

yup...the same is true with my mom's friend...he he and his family travel to the US but because they only have visas--if they desided to stay uphere and give it all up, they'd be living here illegally and would loose everything in order to start over. It's really hard. Especially when he (like many other families), built his own home brick by brick---to have it taken away along with life as he knows it---is very difficult.
