Ladies: Protect Yourself
From this month's Honey Magazine
"Protect Yourself. You don't have to be a victim The statistics are startling: 1.5 million women surveyed in a July 2000 study by the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control were raped and/or physically assaulted in teh US, and nearly 25% of all American women have reported a sexual attack at the hands of someone they know. Here, Honey suggests 9 ways to avoid being assaulted. 1.Get a buddy - If you live alone, have someone to call once you've returned home to let them know you've arrived safely. Have a code word or phrase to use if youa re under duress, so the person youc all knows something is wrong. 2.Ring the alarm - If someone's tryin gto get in, a loud sound can scare him off-or at least alert an alarm company, the police or neighbors that something is wrong. Install an alarm. 3.Lock it up - Rapists who don't know their victims might enter through unlocked windows and doors. Check window and door locks frequently, and replace those that don't work properly. 4.Light it up - It's harder for attackers to strike if they dont' know when you're coming and going. Leave soem lights and a radio or television on while you're out. If lights are on a timer, change the settings around so the same lights do not come on at the same time each night. 5.Sip safely - Keep an eye on your Cosmo. The use of "date rape" drugs like Rohypnol and gamma hydrobutyrate (GHB) is on the rise. Accept drinks only from the bartender, and if a guy offers to buyyou one, walk with him to the bar. 6.Dress cute and carefully - Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you can run i, if need be - or, if you choose to wear something slinky and sexy, think of how you'd move in the outfit. Don't be afraid to kick off those shoes to get away. 7.Take car care - Fumbling for keys in a dark parking lot leaves you vulnerable. Have your keys in your hands as you approach your car, and always check inside before getting in. 8.Park smart - Avoid dark areas and park in well-lighted lots or under streetlights. If you see a man sitting in a car alone or standing around for no reason, go back and ask a friend or a guard to escort you to your ride. 9.Be paranoid - Trust your instincts: If a person or situation seems unsafe, assume they are. |
