Girls And Male Role Models

This post was inspired by Kama's post about Single Parents
Boys having a father or some sort of positive male role model is stressed a lot in the Black community, and rightfully so.. However, many over look the need for male role models in a young woman's life... when a young woman sees positive males (men who are responsible, men who treat women with respect, men who are monogomous) she she is able to identify, seeks and expects those same traits in the men she wants to pursue relationships with... Young women who lack positive male role models tend not to be able to identify these traits in the men they date and the result is a series of bad relationships... Next thing she takes the attitude that all men are dogs or men are no good....
Do yall think this is so? What are your opinions??

I totally agree with you Hornaman, they always talk about young men having a role models in their lives, ell young ladies need male role models in their lives too! In order for them to decipher some positive men into their lives, then maybe they can choose life partners who somehow have this trait like their fathers! My mother used to say 'we tend to choose men like our fathers!', which needless to say in most cases are true!

Very true. Often young ladies with strong male role models are better able to make relationship choices as far as not just looking for someone who fills the void of an absent father or such figure.

Boys and girls need both male and female role models. However the mere presence of the parents doesn't necessarily curb this, what they show and teach them is most important. A quote I like but have forgotten the author is to the effect that "Children never listen to what adults say but never fail to imitate their actions".

I agree with everything AW says...esp. what's in bold. Fortunately, I was raised with a wonderful dad, and it's hard to meet someone in today's world with his basic traits who's ready to settle down.
