Question Caribbean women VS. Caribbean men

For all of those living in NYC, you may know of the radio station 98.7 Kiss FM. Well Michael Baisden the Author of Men Cry in the Dark has a radio talk show from 2-6pm called love lust and lies. Basically talkin about problems in relationships.
The one problem I have with his show is a lot of the time he focuses on the downfalls of Black men, where basically black men become pappy shows. ie: Men who don't take care of their Kids, men who dont have a college education etc.

The sad thing is some of this is very true, and it got me thinking. How many caribbean men do you know who have college degrees and are pursuing further into higher ed, or becoming entrepreneurs VS. Caribbean women doing the same?

I find myself seeing more and more caribbean women stepping up to the plate these days and taking the corporate world by storm....while I see a lot of my male counterparts sit back and relax.

Fellas:What do you think the reason for this is? and How do you think we can start to focus more?

Well this is kind of hard for me to come and make a general statement at first!! I don't have demographics, BUT from my experience, I know more West Indian Women moving up when it comes to career sense, but also it all depends of the industry you are talking about! I also know many West Indian men who have not finished a full fledge degree or continuous studie, but the career they chosed if it's music, a Barber Shop, there own business are making some strides for themselves.. But I want to think more on this issue, it's very important how radio shows and television shows make one sex look better than the other!? hmmmmmmm.. I'll be back on this Percy!

it depends

i think generally "women" have taken over in the large numbers whether we're talking about college enrollment or in the workplace. and there are statistics to prove this.
now within our west indian community, we're seeing a transistion from where men were usually the providers and now in this modern day, in the 'land of opportunity' ...women are stepping up to the plate..for numerous reasons..
women have mouths to feed, rent to pay..i think we've have established the fact that a man wont always be around, therefore somebody's gotta do the job.
another reason..many women..especially older women grew up in generations where it was forbidden to excel to the levels of opposite sex..now that times have changed and endless opportunities await...they're going in full force..and teaching their lil girls too :)
but again this goes on within most races...
we cant just think its west indians..
i will still give the west indian man the credit he deserves and think he's excelling just as hard...for it was a west indian women who raised him :)

I am not sure about the trend either way, although I think I've heard that there are a lot more girls in UWI. I think that in high school the boys have a lot more pressure to be cool in ways that include not being (seen as) "smart." They tend to focus their energy more on other things, sports, fun, etc in highschool and stray so far from the path there (in highschool) that they don't even think about college (they don't see the reasons to go).

Great points...but what is puzzling me the most is whats turning a lot of the fellas away from higher ed, and going further than normal. I would say financial burdens but the women out there are applying for scholarships, loans, some even hold fulltime jobs to pay for school. So that is not a valid reason. And the notion of not being bright enough for books doesnt hold well with me neither cuz I went to school with a lot of smart fellas who have the ability to make the grade.

So whats the issue?

I find that, one west indian men are not geared for school as women are. men who are in skilled trades, regular laborers etc are seen as the norm in our communities. thus many do not strive to do much else

also school is not seen as cool when most are in highschool, for one my bf said that in trinidad he was more concerend with having money and school was not giving him that, he never knew he would be here in the US and need it. then to come up here and start school all over is very scary to some and w ind men have not been "allowed" to be scared vulnerable, etc,. so to them school makes them feel less in command and more in the commandee role

once again not all w ind men are like this jus the ones addressed in topic.....
