Thumbs down Bush Opposes Taiwan Bid for Independence

Bush Opposes Taiwan Bid for Independence

By GEORGE GEDDA, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) said Tuesday after meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he opposes the apparent interest of Taiwan's leaders in taking steps toward independence.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office after a 40-minute meeting with Wen, Bush said he had told the premier, "The United States policy is one China."

"We oppose any unilateral decision by either China or Taiwan to change the status quo," Bush said, "and the comments and actions made by the leader of Taiwan indicate that he may be willing to make decisions unilaterally, to change the status quo, which we oppose."

It was the administration's strongest statement to date in opposition to Taiwan's plan to conduct a referendum on March 20 on whether the Taiwanese people want to demand that China withdraw hundreds of missiles aimed at Taiwan and renounce the use of force against the island.

Who says we need 'one' caribbean as defined by you. We already have one caribbean...a) there is no other; b) we're unified on most of the things that require unity. We're not homogenous and need to recognize that and kill the unification talk in my book.

As for Bush's stance...doesn't surprise me one bit...can't do nutten to provoke China. At the same time it's politics at it's best...pure hypocrisy and double-standards.

I think this is an attempt to unite with China to go up against North Korea..we'll see how that goes. Come March 20 when the referendum is formal submitted I suspect there will be a whole lot of drama going on between Taiwan and China.

UNIFICATION IS D BEST TING FOR ALL OF US.

RIGHT NOW ALL, WE ARE NOTHING BUT A BAND OF LITTLE ISLANDS WHICH ARE NOTHING BUT TINY KINGDOMS THAT ARE EXPLOITED BY A TINY MINORITY IN EACH ISLAND...WHICH COULD DO LITTLE AND PRACTICALLY NOTHING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT FOR EACH ISLAND INDIVIDUALLY.

The Caribbean cannot SURVIVE without UNIFICATION. With the advancement of GLOBALIZATION and the upcoming FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas), the Caribbean cannot survive unless we SPEAK as one voice.

You have already seen an INCREASE in membership in the European Union. Most of the African nations have already RESTRUCTURED the old OAU (Organization of African Unity) into the more VIABLE AU (African Union).

The AU has already started on Africa’s RENEWAL with the INTRODUCTION of NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development). The Caribbean will have to do the same with its CSME (Caribbean Single Market and Economy). We’re a small region compare to the others. It would be TOTAL suicide if we think that we can survive going it alone.

This is why I believe that a POLITICAL union is a step in the right direction. Now that it seems like most of region is in support of the CCJ (Caribbean Court of Justice), we have to get the CSME situation rectified, if we expect to have any real influence when the FTAA comes on board in 2005.

The more we SCRABBLE amongst each other, the more INFLUENCE BUSH is going to have in making sure that we do not UNITE as one.

It'll be interesting to see how the Caribbean will unite when each individual island is fighting inside itself
