Beware the emerging politics of water

It has long become fashionable to buy, stock and drink bottled water. This of course was partly because of the contamination of regular water. But this phenomenon has quickly become yet another milestone in the colonisation of natural resources by multinational corporations. Those of us in the Caribbean and areas labelled the "Third World" should not let the meanderings of Washington, London, Ottawa and Tel Aviv, while informative as to their true workings and mentality, completely distract us from other measures that are slowly seeking to control certain things we take for granted are available to all. The last century was fought principally over oil and colonies (for access to their resources), it is estimated that the wars and conflicts in this century may be fought over access to water.

Water

Ananci,

To add, this issue has far reaching consequences…this is part of the reasoning behind “U.s.rael’s” encroachment on land in the region…water supplies!

Check out these old articles:

(a) “U.s.rael’s” water problem:

Excerpt:
Israel has suffered from a chronic water shortage for years. In recent years however, the situation has developed into a crisis so severe that it is feared that by the next summer it may be difficult to adequately supply municipal and household water requirements.

(b) “U.s.rael’s” actions:

Excerpts:
Israel is being warned that the country's water supplies are dangerously low, and it will have to accept drastic cuts in consumption.

…But the issue is politically charged and linked to the wider dispute over Palestinian statehood.

…In the West Bank and Gaza, Palestinians run local government but Israel still controls most of the water resources.

Accusations
The Palestinians accuse Israel of diverting water away from their towns to keep Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories fully supplied.

Thanks for those links; I particularly remembered the second article when it appeared.

Caribbean countries should be particularly watchful; if the India experiance is any indication, the mere fact that your country has a plentiful supply of water does not mean that you will always have access to it. If one's government is corrupt, inept or simply visionless and spineless (as is the case in many countries), multi-national corporations will eventually show up to twist their arm into signing a deal that essentially signs away one's water supply to be returned at a very high fee. If nothing else Dr Vandana Shiva's many articles and books have pointed that out in stark detail.

And both Coca-cola and Pepsi-cola have corralled off huge expanses of water in India and enticed the government to pass legislation that prevents the people who have lived around thos bodies of water for centuries, from accessing the water.
