Unhappy Beauty and Young girls today!

Ok...so I work on an inpatient Psychiatric unit....and within the past month we have had a total of 4 eating disorder patients all under the age of 12. It can be really hard to work with them because they have such a warped since of body image that many of us couldn't imagine.....I just want to know what in the world is going on in society that these girls feel the need to be pencil-thin to look beautiful? And as West Indians, how often do we see this problem in our culture?

just look at the media, the superstars.

Take top model for instance, with the second season and all, the girls are always fairly thin.

Society has alot to do with what out future holds for our kids.

Try to remember how the society was 10 yrs ago, it's nothing like what it is today so imagine 10 yrs from now.

it has a lot to do with ur home though.. if ur parents make you feel comfortable in ur skin, i don't beleive you suffer with an eating disorder.. you may be might eat too much..

This is really sad and becoming a problem. Years ago, you would never find that young black or brown girls would have eating disorders, but as our girls are becoming more influenced by the media they are developing the same diseases as young white girls. These girls watch MTV and tv shows in general and they just want to be thin, thin, thin.

Even when the parents are telling these girls they are beautiful, they are still being influenced by the media, whcih can be destructive.
