NY/Brooklyn Sun 8th June

Dear Friends and Family,

The Howard University Trinidad and Tobago Alumni Association is taking part in the AIDS Walk Caribbean, Brooklyn, New York 5k walk on Sunday June 8, 2008 to raise funds for the CPIC AIDS FUND.

If you are unable to participate, please visit our website (link can be seen below) to make a donation. All proceeds go to the CPIC AIDS fund. We are hoping to generate at least $500.00 in donations, so please forward to all your friends!!

If you are able to participate, we intend to meet up at the Flatbush Ave. - Brooklyn College (Subway Station): 2,5 Train) @ 9AM.

We feel blessed to have the opportunity to give back to the community by raising funds for AIDS education and a hospice for persons living with AIDS. You may be unaware that every nine minutes a female of color is infected with HIV, and it takes the lives of more people of color than any other group. I hope you'll join us in supporting this fight.

Thanks.

At once concert tribute, Marley family travelogue and humanitarian documentary, AFRICA UNITE ignites the screen with the spirit of world-renowned reggae icon Bob Marley in every frame. In commemoration of Bob's 60th birthday, AFRICA UNITE is centered on the Marleys' first-ever family trip to Ethiopia in 2005. There, in the capital city of Addis Ababa, three generations of Marleys take part in a landmark one-week event including a 12-hour concert like no other, attended by more than 350,000 people from around the world. Appearing alongside the many Marleys are Lauryn Hill, Angélique Kidjo and Danny Glover. DIR/SCR/PROD Stephanie Black. EX PROD Rita Marley, Cedella Marley, Danny Glover, Joslyn Barnes. THE HARDER THEY COME
Friday, June 6, 9:45; Saturday, June 7, 12:00 midnight
The original "midnight movie!" Billed as "Jamaica's very first feature-length film," THE HARDER THEY COME introduced world audiences to Jamaican music, one year before Bob Marley and the Wailers' debut album would become an international smash. Popstar Jimmy Cliff plays Ivan, a rural Jamaican musician who journeys to Kingston in search of fame and fortune as a musician. Pushed to desperate circumstances by shady record producers, he instead starts selling ganja, achieving notoriety after he shoots and kills a corrupt cop—becoming public enemy number one at the same time that his single starts climbing the charts.

Eve, Vanessa A Williams, Mashonda in star-studded CFW line-up

Eve... among stars coming to Jamaica for Caribbean Fashionweek

Urban music and movie superstar turned fashion mogul Eve, Soul Food TV and big screen fave, turned celebrity model Vanessa A Williams and new soul recording artiste Mashonda Dean are part of a star-studded line-up of celebrities, movie stars, music icons and fashionistas who are headed to Jamaica for Caribbean Fashionweek, the region's biggest and most influential fashion extravaganza. The stars will walk the runway at CFW and have promised a slew of surprises during their special guest appearances at the event. A number of other local and international stars will be announced shortly.

Eve, famous for a range of film roles including the Barber Shop series, continues to have a very successful music career after bursting on the scene in the late 1990s with such rap hits as Gotta Man, What Ya'll Want and Love Is Blind. Her exploration of her singing voice in addition to her hardcore rapping skills guaranteed the rapper international success and tracks like Who's That Girl, Let Me Blow Me Your Mind with Gwen Stefani of No Doubt and Gangsta Lovin, with Alicia Keys gave rise to a whole new fan base. From her fourth studio album titled Here I Am, the blonde bombshell released Tambourine, an upbeat international dance anthem produced by the legendary Swizz Beats. The follow-up track, Give It To You, a reggae-influenced breezy mid-tempo song featuring our own Sean Paul has also enjoyed great success.

Eve now has her own celebrity fashion line called Fetish and Caribbean fashion fans will get a chance to preview pieces from her new collection now being shipped for fall. Eve will walk the runway with her models and says that she is very excited to participate in this event, which is being covered by the world press, including Elle, Fashion TV Paris, BET, i-D, the BBC, Marie Claire and the New York Times, among others.

From her memorable performance, and often quoted lines in the cult classic film New Jack City "Rock a bye Baby!" to her sexy no-nonsense portrayal of Maxine Chadway in the Showtime and BET television series Soul Food, Vanessa A Williams is magic guaranteed. An empowering African American actress and Broadway star, Williams also hit the media radar as one of the stars in the Fox TV hit Melrose Place, two BET original made for TV movies Incognito and Playing with Fire, and as guest star on Total Recall, The Pretender, NYPD Blue, The Steve Harvey Show, Malcolm and Eddie, Living Single and Cold Case among many others.

Vanessa secured the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in the Soul Food series and has earned a Daytime Emmy Nomination for her extraordinary work in Our America a Showtime original series. A talented writer as well as singer and actress, Vanessa has written a collection of poetry and prose titled Shine. Her poems and essays have also appeared in Essence magazine.

Mashonda Deans, professionally known just as Mashonda, is an R&B singer signed to Full Surface/J Records. Married to whiz rap and R&B producer Swizz Beats, Mashonda has been featured on tracks with Mya, Eve, DMX and The Game. A professional songwriter as well as singer, Mashonda has also recorded with Snoop Dogg producing the hit Blackout as well as with Get No Better with Cassidy.

CFW 2008 will feature the Caribbean's best designers as well as an elite set of international avant garde designers, including Deola Sagoe from Nigeria, Gavin Douglas from London, Catalin Bothezatu from Romania and Sushma Patel from India. This year's event will see the return of some Caribbean heavyweights such as Jamaica's urban maestro, Biggy; Barbados' couturier to high fashion jet-set, Simon Peter, Trinidad's grande dame of ultra minimalist sophisticated chic, Meiling and Jamaican Britisher Sandra Kennedy. Other standouts include Bill Edwards, Mutamba, Barry Moncrieffe from Jamaica as well as Claudia Pegus from Trinidad.

The mix of stylists and this galaxy of celebrities and international personalities will make CFW 2008 a strong contender for Jamaica's event of the year, all categories considered. Since its inception in 2001, CFW has evolved and grown in leaps and bounds whilst remaining true to its Caribbean creative elements. This synergy of Caribbean culture and international pizzazz has earned the show major respect from important fashion press around the world including British Vogue and Fashion TV Paris.

CFW is presented by Pulse in association with Audi, Smirnoff, Fashion TV Paris, Virgin Atlantic, Viva Sparkling Water, Nestle's Fitness Cereal, the BIDC, Invest Barbados, The Jamaica Tourist Board, The Hilton, Courtleigh and Knutsford Court hotels, The Jamaica Observer, Nestle Supligen, CVM TV, Ocean Style, She Caribbean, Jamrock magazine, Hype TV and several other sponsors to be announced.

Pepsi Portland Jerk Festival now 3-day event

Friday, June 06, 2008

PORT ANTONIO, Portland - The organising committee of the Pepsi Portland Jerk Festival has announced that the event has expanded to a three-day weekend for the ninth staging of the event this year.

Known as Jamaica's largest food festival, the 2008 Pepsi Portland Jerk Festival takes place from July 4 to 6.
The Festival opens on Friday July 4 with the official opening at the Boston Playing Field and a Children's Fun Day from 12noon to 6:00pm. Boston is known as the home of Jerk and the Boston Playing Field was the venue for the first year of the Festival in 2000. On Saturday evening, there will be a retro-costume party "Flavours of Dancehall..A Trip Down Memory Lane" at Boston Beach. John Holt will perform and Coppershot will play indigenous music though the ages.

Frenchman's Cove will be the venue for an all-inclusive beach party on Saturday, July 5th. Patrons can spend Saturday afternoon with good friends, delicious food and great music. They will be treated to some of the best cuisine from Portland's leading hotels and chefs and rock to the rhythms of Renaissance Disco and the party vibes of DJ Kurt Riley.

The highlight of the weekend festival will be the "Big Show" Pepsi Portland Jerk Festival at the picturesque Folly grounds. From 10:00am to 10:00pm patrons will enjoy a day filled with great food, fun and entertainment for the entire family. This year the event will again feature more than 25 stalls showcasing the best jerked foods available on the island. In addition, there will be the Kids Village, art and craft booths, a cultural village and a stage show featuring some of Jamaica's most popular bands and entertainers. Performers will include Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires, Beenie Man, Sanchez, Christopher Martin, Noddy Virtue, D'Angel, Peter Lloyd, Stitchie, Sanchez and many of Portland's best talent.

"The Portland Jerk Festival was created to be a showcase of the people, indigenous food and culture of Portland," said Sybil Rendle, chairman of the Portland Jerk Festival Committee speaking at the launch at Folly Lighthouse on Wednesday. "The event has caught the imagination of Jamaican people and has now blossomed into a major food and family festival. The expansion of the Festival to a 3 day event is consistent with our vision to turn it into one of Jamaica's biggest festivals."

Denise Dixon, Head of Marketing for title sponsors Pepsi Cola Jamaica, commended the organizing committee for the work they have done to create a high quality, family entertainment event. She said "Portland continues to enjoy a renaissance as a result of the tourism and infrastructure developments taking place, and the expansion of the festival to a full weekend of activities gives Jamaicans and visitors to the island yet another reason to come and spend more time in Portland."

The staging of the main event at the grounds of the Folly Ruins gives patrons an opportunity to appreciate one of the most intriguing and beautiful sites in the parish of Portland.

The Festival moved to Folly in 2007 in order to more comfortably accommodate the growing number of patrons who attend the event every year. While the popular legend of Folly is that it was an ill-fated, poorly constructed mansion built by a rich American to impress his sweetheart, the true story is that it was a 60 room Roman villa built in 1905 by Alfred Mitchell who was married to the Tiffany heiress, Annie Tiffany. The mansion was equipped with all sorts of modern conveniences for its day, including its own power station, an indoor swimming pool and an independent water reservoir.

Red face Carnival Messiah To Be Showcased At The Royal Albert Hall, London

Geraldine Connors acclaimed production Carnival Messiah will experience another ground breaking moment as the production prepares to showcase at the Royal Albert Hall in London in July.

As the name implies, the showcase is an opportunity to present to a special audience the creative and marketing potential of a product. Messiah and the creative team are no strangers to this approach, having been initiated into the world of theatre business, beyond the limited run, by the American Broadway bound Dream Team.

But that was not to be-not then anyway. Since the rights of Carnival Messiah reverted to Connor, the company, headed by Vicount David Lescelles (the 5th Earl of Harewood) remounted Messiah in Leeds, UK for an extended run in the autumn of 2007, as part of the celebration of the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade.

An award winning film and theatre producer himself, Lescelles is committed to the advancement of Carnival Messiah. Taking on the role as executive producer, Lescelles says: "I don't know of any more exuberant, more spectacular, more inclusive expression of Caribbean culture than Carnival Messiah.

He brands it as "a profound and uplifting cross-cultural experience . . . born in the Caribbean and nurtured in Yorkshire".

Meanwhile, Connor continues to strengthen her own directorial and musical skills and is on board with The Harder They Come Jamaica's phenomenal theatre production (from the film by Perry Henzell) which is making history now as Caribbean theatre that has broken into the mainstream.

That is the plan for Carnival Messiah. According to Carol La Chapelle, who has journeyed with Derek Walcott and the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, as they left their mark in the international theatre arena, Carnival Messiah has the potential to be the next international Caribbean theatrical benchmark coming part of the Caribbean.

La Chapelle will journey to England to join Connor in rehearsal with the cast and prepare to present this cultural feast from Trinidad and Tobago to the UK audience, among whom will be members of the Royal family.
