Kaita receives death threats – a reminder of th...

Nigeria’s midfielder Sani Kaita, after receiving a red card in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Greece on Friday, received an even more dangerous card; a death threat.

Kaita was sent off when Nigeria was 1-0 and he aimed a kick at Greece’s defender Torosidis. He received death threats on email, but Kaita did not seem to be terrified by them and said that only God decides who lives or dies.

This episode was a reminder of the horrific fate of Andres Escobar, defender from Colombia who was murdered after the 1994 World Cup.

It is believed that Andres Escobar was killed because of an own goal scored by him in the match against USA. It was an inadvertent kick by Andres Escobar which brought the ball to their own net and that goal resulted in U.S. having a stunning victory and infuriating thousands of Colombians. It was two weeks after this game that Andres Escobar was shot dead.
