Question What happened to TAMIKA Awards?!?

Ah so tiyad ah all this Grammy talk now.

To me Grammys, AMAs, etc. is like begging, and will forever be about as representative to we music as the Country Music Awards.

We need -- AND HAD -- a show just as regal and with the potential to grow large as those shows. Where our artist would perform OUR music with OUR pure vibes, no watering down or nothing. No cross-polinating we culture. A show aiming to be truly representative of our culture.

Some of you know what it was, the Tamika Reggae Awards. And yes, they recognized soca's influence and had soca categories too. The awards ran for 13 years, from 1990 or thereabouts.

Ppl, why can't we have we own?!? Why must we beg? Do we even ever want our?!? *sigh*

And does anybody know what happened to the Tamika Awards?

The Tamika Awards died a slow death....

They started off with good intentions but suffered the last few years with bad productions. They did not have the support of the artists at the end.....

Now, a good awards show is the Miami ReggaeSoca awards. Its being held this year on June 12 at the Broward Performing arts Center. they do have a few Soca categories and always have a live soca performer. The production is always good with lots of artists there for performing and accepting their awards....

Yea, I remember hearing about the poor productions. It's a shame though. It makes u wonder if it's better to fight to improve something for ourselves -- even something that was becoming so poor -- or let it die off and start over. Not sure which.

Wonder if someone will take it over and ressurect it, with quality......shame if not.

I'll keep an eye out for those Miami awards.

Anybody else think it important to develop we own instead worrying bout Grammys?

I mean, if u wanna talk about best reggae album, shouldn't that have gone hands down to Sizzla "Da Real Thing"?

I think we need to come out more and support these events. Part of the problem is that the tickets never sell out and the promoters can barely afford to pay the performers.

Also major corporations are the main foundation of things like the Grammys.... and I guess it will of course have to start from the bottom... I guess it's all about connections, building relations wit corp. and making a name fuh oneself... I hope this show builds into something positive for them for years to come!
