John. D and S/F’doTech assigned to UTT

The John Donaldson Technical Institute and the San Fernando Technical Institute have now been incorporated into the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Minister of Tertiary Education, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, stated this at the post Cabinet press conference at Whitehall held on June 16.

These schools together with UTT’s Pt. Lisas campus will offer the new National Engineering Technicians Diploma from September 2005.

This diploma will replace all other engineering diplomas offered at local technical institutions including UTTs Diploma in Technology, the National Technicians Diploma and the Associate Degree in Engineering offered by the College of Science and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT).

Minister Abdul-Hamid said a review undertaken by UTT and COSTAATT found their programmes had the same educational objective but produced graduates of inconsistent quality. This created confusion with employers, accreditation agencies and the students themselves.

He said the new diploma aims to produce technicians consistent with standards demanded by international industry and accreditation agencies.

The program will offer a choice of six engineering disciplines: Electronic instrumentation technology, Information and Communications technology, Process and Utilities Technology, Civil and Construction Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, and Petroleum Engineering Technology.
