Unhappy Uncle accused in murder thought baby was 'possessed'

WEST PALM BEACH - A Palm Beach County man was ordered held without bond on Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the stabbing of his 1-year-old nephew.

Eric Sawyer, 38, is charged with fatally stabbing Brandon Cole Tuesday night at the home of the child's grandmother. An arrest report made public Wednesday said that when Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the scene, they found the infant with a large cut on his torso.

When they quizzed Sawyer about what had happened, he reportedly said he was responsible.

I thought the baby was possessed, so I had to cut it out of him," the arrest report quoted Sawyer as saying. He reportedly told deputies he had thought about it for the past four days, and stabbed the infant twice in the heart with a butcher knife he found in the kitchen.

The baby didn't die right away, Sawyer told detectives. He told them he stood over Brandon for five minutes, then wrapped the infant, who was still alive, in sheets he took from the crib and laid him on the dryer in the laundry room. A relative then called deputies.

Sawyer said he felt '"really bad" about what happened, the arrest report said,.

"It's a horrific crime, this is just horrific," PBSO spokesman Paul Miller said. "The baby was stabbed and slashed."

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. Swayer was ordered held without bond this morning by Judge Paul Moyle.

Deputies were called to the home, in the 5800 block of Orchard Way west of West Palm Beach, about 8:30 p.m. When a deputy arrived, it at first appeared to be a dog mauling, said Sgt. Pete Palenzuela, a sheriff's spokesman.

Authorities questioned the three adults who were in the home: the baby's grandmother, who he said owns the house; a friend of the family; and Sawyer.

When deputies arrived, people in front of the home were yelling, "Save the baby," Palenzuela said.

A deputy found the boy wrapped in a blanket in the laundry room. He was bleeding and died at the scene, Palenzuela said. It appeared that the baby suffered a puncture wound or slash on his abdomen, he said.

Neighbors in the community, just north of Belvedere Road between Haverhill and Jog roads, seemed to be tight-knit and declined to speak to reporters at the family's request.

The Sawyer home was burned in a Dec. 14 fire that caused $30,000 in smoke damage.
