Government is set to award cellular licences to the Irish firm Digicel and local start-up Laqtel, breaking the 26-year-old monopoly that majority state-owned TSTT has maintained on the mobile telecommunications service.

Digicel and Laqtel emerged as the two successful bidders at yesterday’s historic online auction for the two cellular licences.

The announcement was made by Telecommunications Authority (TATT) chairman Dr Ralph Henry at the regulator’s San Juan offices at a news conference that started just after 4 pm.

Henry said he expected the two companies to be providing cellular service to local customers “before the end of the year” in competition against TSTT which now has an estimated 700,000 cellular customers.

He explained that Cabinet has to make a formal award of the licences to the companies and they also have to reach an interconnection agreement with TSTT.

Henry said he has “no control over the length of time that Cabinet would take,” to make the award.

The Telecommunications Act gives Cabinet 60 days to award the licences, a TATT official said.

Digicel bid US$15,750,003 (an estimated $100 million) for a five-block licence while Laqtel bid US$9,300,007 ($58.5 million) for a three-block licence.

I wonder how long it going to take them to start operating in T&T....

“We are excited about becoming an important part of Trinidad and Tobago’s community and its growing economy. By redefining the role of telecommunications throughout the region, we can play a significant part in improving the quality of life for everyone and bringing further assurance that Trinidad and Tobago can reach its 2020* goal,” said Mr Anthony Fifi, from the HCL Group.

Digicel Founder and Chairman, Mr Denis O’Brien added, “Digicel will commence a rapid roll out of its service that will give Trinidadians and Tobagonians the opportunity of choosing a service provider that will offer superior customer care, better value for money and wider coverage.”
