Milwaukee, Wisconsin (AP) -- Three men were charged in a beating that left a 14-year-old boy in a coma, including one man accused of hitting the victim's head with a piece of lumber.

In the complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Timothy Owens, 31, was charged Friday with first-degree reckless injury. Mario Brown, 21, and Davell Going, 22, were charged with physical abuse of a child.

The three men remained jailed Friday night.

The incident July 8 started when Tyrin Douglas got into an argument with some girls during a recreation program at Brown Street Academy, and the dispute developed into a shoving match and moved to a nearby park, the complaint said.

At one point, one girl said she was getting her brothers, and a group of 10 or more men soon appeared and some of them "jumped on" Douglas, according to witnesses quoted in the complaint. One witness said Owens ran to a nearby apartment building and got the piece of lumber.

The complaint said Owens hit Douglas as the boy was on his back trying to shield himself from kicks and punches.

Owens told police he meant to hit the boy in the back or chest but hit him instead in the head, the complaint said.

After Douglas was hit with the board, he stopped moving and everyone ran away, the complaint said, and Owens threw the board on the roof of a nearby building and went home.

Police initially said the boy was beaten by as many as 20 people, but now say most in the crowd of more than a dozen were watching the three men attack him.

A doctor's statement cited in the complaint said the boy suffered a severe brain injury that left him comatose and dependent on continuous heart and respiratory support to stay alive.

The boy's relatives have been with him in the hospital since the attack, hoping for a sign of improvement, said Jackie Gonia, the mother-in-law of one of Douglas' brothers.

Sgt. Ken Henning, a police spokesman, credited neighbors with coming forward with information that led to the charges.
