    overruled:
witness = answer the question that was posed to you.
lawyer = don't ask the same question again and move on to something else.

    sustained:

witness: don't answer the question that was posed to you, wait for the next question

lawyer: go ahead and ask the witness to answer the question that you just asked.

If both sides are presenting a case to the judge without lawyers, and the judge overrules you...that means the judge doesn't want to hear anything else from you...speak when spoken to...

if the judge sustains something that you say...you're getting your way with him/her....

state your case = tell the judge why you're in court and what you want him/her to do for you...

when in doubt...think of Judge Judy...

well they both mean shut up in a sense. it depends on who its directed towards. I believe the sustained means shut up, or dun de argument.(sustain your questioning)

and over-ruled means your objection is over-ruled (so you shut up) in which case the opposition can go ahead and state the case, or ask the question.
