Slavery Protection For Animals.....

A federal judge for the first time in U.S. history heard arguments Monday in a case that could determine whether animals enjoy the same constitutional protection against slavery as human beings.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller called the hearing in San Diego after Sea World asked the court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that names five orcas as plaintiffs in the case.

PETA claims the captured killer whales are treated like slaves for being forced to live in tanks and perform daily at its parks in San Diego and Orlando, Fla.

"This case is on the next frontier of civil rights," said PETA's attorney Jeffrey Kerr, representing the five orcas.

Sea World's attorney Theodore Shaw called the lawsuit a waste of the court's time and resources. He said it defies common sense and goes against 125 years of case law applied to the Constitution's 13th amendment that prohibits slavery between humans.

"With all due respect, the court does not have the authority to even consider this question," Shaw said, adding later: "Neither orcas nor any other animal were included in the `We the people' ... when the Constitution was adopted."

They have feelings.

That's why I don't think dogs should be locked in cages. I know some owners in my neighboorhood who don't walk their dogs on leeches.

have mixed feelings...

I am for animals being treated humanely... and i think anyone who keeps an animal in less than humane conditions should be punished..

but to waste court money and time on this is a shame...
could find some other way to resolve this...

but many people eat them things assuming that they are kept humanely until slaughter... (even though this is not the case most times) and then are slaughtered humanely...

My man please, what is the last piece of meet you could track back to its origin, and at what point during its consumption did you ponder i wonder if this animal was treated humanely. People don't give a rats ass where the meat they consume comes from or how it was treated. If you make the point, of concern, for animal which are being held in captivity for public amusement, then you weren't get any argument from me.

We are just taking this animal thing way too seriously. If this shit doesn't stop 2 generations from now we when you leave you house to go to work you will need a damn baby sitter for you dog.

dude many people assume that farms are what you see on tv and cartoons with cows grazing and chickents in a coupe.. they dont know about factory farms... and if they did, many people would be upset about it.. just cause its no concern of yours dont mean many people aint concerned about it...

agree..but not to the extent that they will go to extremes as they are in this case..

where is peta when the subject is a farm animal? or a rat?..but here they come when the subject is about an orca..or a mink...(heavens forbid a dog) or something else they think is "cute" or "special"..my point is..an anminal is an animal is an animal...its all the same. thier entire fight in invalidated for me (and anyone who stands on the same side re the issue) becuase you cannot place value on one without placing value on all..

my original post was for Opti...talking about animals have feelings...im wondering how much he cares for those feelings when he filling his gut with them

I'm talking about animals that we don't see as emotional beings.

Would you eat a dog or a cat? If not, hush.

i dont veiw one animal as any better than the next!..

why do you have the view that "some" animals have feelings, yet..others do not? why do you have that view?
