    RIM Unveils Blackberry Workaround Plan

    Thursday, February 09, 2006

OTTAWA Research In Motion (RIMM) released Thursday details of a software workaround it has designed for its BlackBerry e-mail device as a backup plan if U.S. courts rule against the Canadian company in a patent dispute.

News on the workaround plan, which RIM said would require software updates if used, comes in advance of a Feb. 24 hearing on a possible injunction shutting down most U.S. sales and service of BlackBerry.

RIM has previously lost a patent infringement suit to U.S. patent holding company NTP Inc.

Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM said it believes it has strong arguments to oppose an injunction, but it developed the workaround designs as a contingency.

"This will hopefully lead to more reasonable negotiations since NTP risks losing all future royalties if the workaround is implemented," RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said in a statement.

He added that RIM remains "pragmatic and reasonable in its willingness to enter into a settlement that would generously compensate NTP while protecting RIM's business and partners."
