PIRACY against fishermen in the Gulf of Paria escalated into a bloody attack yesterday morning in which four masked men on a boat went on a chopping spree in waters off St Margaret’s Village, La Brea. Three boats were stolen, and seven fishermen attacked, including a 10-year-old boy.

In a bizarre twist, one man, Indar Singh, 55, who went to retrieve fishing nets that were discarded by the pirates, drowned while two other fishermen are feared dead.

Police yesterday described the attack at sea as an added dimension to escalating criminal activity, with four boats and engines stolen.

Fisherman Noris Raj told Sunday Newsday that at about 1.30 am yesterday, he went fishing with Motilal Ramkalawan and Krishna Apoo from the Claxton Bay fishing depot.

They are from Phoenix Park, Claxton Bay, and according to Raj, they anchored their nets approximately two miles off the Petrotrin jetty when they saw another boat approaching theirs — St Peter’s Five. “I flashed the torchlights, but the boat came close and one man jumped into we boat with a cutlass,” Raj said.

Ordered by the masked men to jumped out their boat, Raj said he hesitatingly did as was told, but the cutlass-wielding bandits proceeded to planassed Ramkalawan and Apoo.

As he swam to shore, Raj said he saw the men drive off with their boat. “As I was swimming, I keep looking back and calling out to Apoo and Ramkalawan. I keep going down in 25 feet of water, but eventually I made it to shore,” Raj said.

Couva police in confirming the incident, told the Sunday Newsday, that Apoo and Ramkalawan are feared dead. Distraught, relatives gathered on the St Margaret’s fishing port yesterday as fellow fishermen combed the Gulf yesterday in search of the missing fishermen.

The pirates also attacked in waters off Petrotrin in close proximity to St Margaret’s, where Shannon Moha-mmed and his brother Wazid, of Bayshore, Marabella, were beaten by four masked men. Marabella police told Sunday Newsday that about 3 am, the Mohammeds were confronted in their boats — Naomi TFV 1047, by four masked men in a pirogue. At gun-point, the police report stated, Shannon and Wazid were ordered to jump into the water.

They hesitated to do so, police said, and the pirates proceeded to planasse them until the brothers fell overboard. They managed to make it to shore while the pirates drove off with their boat.

The attack by the same four masked men continued in waters off Otaheite Bay when three fishermen were out at sea and were confronted by the gang, Oropouche Police Station officers reported.

Isaac Yearwood filed the report, that he and two other men were forced to jump overboard. The masked men chopped his colleagues while he escaped by swimming to safety.

The masked men cut the nets and made off with the boat. Yesterday morning when fishermen together with Singh, of Aripero Village, South Oropouche, attempted to retrieve the net, he drowned. His body washed ashore in La Brea. In another police report, Nazir Hosein, of Victoria Village, reported to the San Fernando Police Station that he and another man were confronted at about 2 am by four masked men in waters off the Mosquito Creek.

The report stated that Hosein and the other man were planassed and their boat and engine taken away. Police said that both fishermen swam to safety.
