    Panday Mobilises Security Forces

    Panday mobilises security forces
    By ALVA VIARRUEL

THE PROTECTIVE Services have been mobilised to protect United States interests in this country in the wake of yesterday’s terrorists attacks in the US.

In announcing this yesterday, Prime Minister Basdeo Panday condemned the attacks and offered his condolences to relatives of those killed.

Following a meeting with members of the Miami/Dade Crime Stoppers organisation at Whitehall said he hoped those responsible would be caught and punished. Yesterday was the UN’s International Day of Peace.

The Prime Minister said he has been given the assurance by the Chief of Defence Staff and Police Commissioner that the local forces were alert and ready to deal with any possible terrorist threat.

Acknowledging there was a local connection to the Muslim fundamentalist group Al Qaeda which is led by Osama Bin Laden, Panday said security forces have been mobilised to protect American aircraft on the ground at Piarco International Airport.

Security sources later confirmed that other US interests in Trinidad, including the US Embassy on Marli Street, Port of Spain, were now under 24-hour guard.

The embassy has been closed until further notice, even though it issued a statement advising that it was not aware of any specific threats against US interests in this country.
