I guess you could list it there but don't forget to put a reserve price on it so that you can make some money...

Is he a well know artist? If not you may have trouble recouping that much money on ebay. But it's worth a try.
    Include:
    1.)size of the painting
2.)type of medium used (oil, watercolor, etc)
3.)Type of paper, canvas stretched or rolled, framed
4.)Try to inlcude at least 2 pics...maybe one of the painting in a room.
5.)Use very descriptive and colorful terms in your item description
6.)Try to list the item under more than one category for more exposure
7.) charge enough shipping to cover all costs like packaging and insurance
    8.)Use paypal
9.)Don't start your initial price at any less than the least amount you're willing to accept. Or set a reserve price.

Find out how much the painting is actually worth and then come up with a minimum on how much you would accept for it and let the bidding begin from there.
If he is a well-known artist then it shouldn't be really hard to sell the painting for a lot.
