Thumbs down Obama Signs Monsanto Protection Act Into Law After Promising GMO Labeling in 2007

President Obama has signed into law the notorious Monsanto Protection Act legislation hidden inside of the Continuing Resolution spending bill, which protects Monsanto and its genetically modified creations from federal courts.

Passing up the chance to veto the bill in favor of stopping Monsanto’s increasing monopoly on the food supply, Obama pushed the bill through into a law in a move that reminds us of his failed 2007 promise to ‘immediately’ label GMOs upon his election.

Contained in the rider (Farmer Assurance Provision, Sec. 735) of HR 933, Monsanto is now even protected (at least under this law) from the United States government.

As I pointed out in a previous article, the Monsanto Protection Act’s success actually proves how corporations have more power than even the United States federal government. Monsanto’s lobbyists managed to slip the rider into the major bill, which — despite the rider — has virtually nothing to do with the topic.

This is a typical and routinely practiced move by lobbyists to insert an incognito line of legislation into a bill generally viewed as favorable overall. One that has proven to be effective for Monsanto.

    2007 Promise to Label GMOs

The result is now major outcry against Obama for signing the bill into law and protecting the biotech juggernaut Monsanto. Many fail to remember, however, that Obama first decided to allow Monsanto to continue pulverizing the food supply and the health of the nation back in 2008 when he went back on his promise to ‘immediately’ label GMOs. It was in 2007, during a campaign speech, that Obama first stated his support of non-GMO and GMO labeling activists, in which he promised to swiftly label GMOs.

You can see the video from our Youtube channel here:

For a brief period before the bill was passed by the Senate and now signed into law by Obama, both myself and many others in the alternative news community crusaded tirelessly to alert politicians and activists in order to stop the Protection Act from going through. Unfortunately, time was not on our side. The hasty vote by the Senate and the news blackout from the mainstream media were enough to break through the warnings of concerned activists (and people who just want real food). Now, however, renewed interest in the GMO labeling campaign and the fight against Monsanto brews.

With such a blatant and cocky act against the United States and its people, Monsanto has set itself up to fail. Let’s remind Obama of his promise to label GMOs he made many years ago

This guy sells the fock out with food corporations SOO FOCKING MUCH.

If he seriously cared about the health of the nation he would not be so frequently swinging from the balls of food corporations.

    This belongs in backchat.

I was going to put it there but then I thought it would just get buried 'cause not too many would take interest. Maybe I thought wrong

But yeah, this was so straight up under-handed ish he pulled having it burying in a rider. Same man who promised in '07 to implement GMO labelling as soon as he was elected. Full of shit 'cause he couldnt even do this in the daylight.

Even the Tea Party is pissed about the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’

Even the Tea Party is pissed about the ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ | Grist

Everybody’s gotta pitch in to bring down Hulk, er, Monsanto.
Feeling angry about the “Monsanto Protection Act”? You know, the sneakily passed piece of legislation that allows GMO crops to be planted even in defiance of a court order? Well, you’re not alone! The law is so scary that it’s inspiring outrage from the far right.

It’s always a delight to see the left and right agree on anything, and when it comes to fighting genetically modified giant Monsanto, it may well take just that kind of a passionate coalition to get anything done.

But it’s not the GMO issue that’s turning Tea Party Patriot Dustin Siggins’ stomach — it’s the precedent this could set for other corporations that might want legal immunity.

    From Siggins’ blog:

This all can be boiled down into a single, common phrase: a special interest loophole, and a doozy at that. We are used to subsidies, which give your tax dollars to companies to give them advantages over competitors. We are used to special interest tax loopholes and tax credits, which provide competitive and financial benefits to those with friends in Congress. And we are familiar with regulatory burden increases, which often prevent smaller companies from competing against larger ones because of the cost of compliance.

However, this is a different kind of special interest giveaway altogether. This is a situation in which a company is given the ability to ignore court orders, in what boils down to a deregulation scheme for a particular set of industries.

Great, Siggins! Now let’s skip the Kumbaya and the flag-waving, and get right to creating a broad-based coalition with the potential of defeating Monsanto, k?

Prop. 37 Died, but the Food-Labeling Fight Lives - Voice of San Diego: Active-voice

You might remember the fight over California’s failed Proposition 37, which would have required labeling of foods that contain genetically modified ingredients.
The measure started with wide public approval, but an influx of more than $46 million from corporate giants like Kellogg’s, General Mills, PepsiCo, Monsanto and others, to fight the proposal successfully reversed the tide of support. Prop. 37 was rejected by voters in November.
The movement to label genetically modified ingredients, however, is alive and well.
The JustLabelIt campaign says there are currently 14 states with similar bills being considered, including Washington, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Vermont, New York and Maryland. Federal legislation was also introduced by Colorado Rep. Jared Polis. And in California, expect to see a new ballot initiative in 2014.
If that’s not enough to convince the food industry that GMO labeling is inevitable, on Friday, national grocer Whole Foods announced it had set a deadline for its suppliers to label genetically modified foods. By 2018, any products sold in their U.S. and Canadian stories that contain GMO ingredients such as corn, soybean, beet sugar or canola must be labeled. That includes the San Diego area stores in Hillcrest, La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas.
