Nomination for best supporting actress, to Ruby Dee in American Gangster?
In American Gangster, Ruby Dee ( she played Denzels Mother) got a nomination for best supporting actress, but she wasn't in the movie much and didn't strike me as anything special???? Weird, my wife and I think that she just got the nod cuz they needed a black person to be nominated in a major category.
Anyone else think this? |

I thought the same thing when I heard she was nominated a while ago. Her role really wasn't that significant enough to warrant a nomination regardless of how well she did it.
It may have been a combination of being black and being in the biz for so long. IMDB lists her first role as being in 1939. Who knows...
