My brother is interested in becoming a pilot. He was looking at some school in NJ that you have to stay at or something so. Anyway, the school is apparantly very expensive AND they do not take financial aid. I told him to look into some other schools but the only one I knew off the top of my head to recommend was Embry Riddle. Just wondering what advice you can offer for him. He is starting to consider the Air Force option but really would prefer not to go that route.

If they do not accept financial aid, then he definitely will have alot of problems getting financing from a bank. Many banks have given up on career training loans (Sallie Mae & the sort).

My first bit of advice is to go to a state run University and do the flight training there, because they always accept financial aid and they usually have scholarship programs for minorites with good grades. ( Western Michigan University College of Aviation My Alma Mater...#2 program in the US when i attended...behind Embry Riddle; Purdue University Flight Program; The Ohio State Flight Program ).

Now with going to a public Aviation university, he will gain alot of debt in the forms of gov't and bank loans. Unless of course he can get a full ride based on academics, sports, music....etc.

He could go the military route, but he is basically signing is life away for 10 years. He would have to sign a 10 year contract with the airforce once he gets done with training.

Or he could go to the local county airport and find a privately run flight school and pay for lessons out of pocket. This is definitely the cheapest and least debt ridden route, however all funding would have to come out of pocket....but all privately run flight schools allow students to go at their own pace for any reason at all...so if money runs out he can just start again from where he left off when more money is available for that.

I can tell you that as long as he gets a four year degree in anything else, he will be competitive when it comes time for him to get an airline job. I recommend him getting a 4 year degree in some other field that would later prove to be solvent, while he learns how to fly.

Oui...thank you very much. I sent the link to him and had him check the thread been busy like a bee! Thank you for taking the time to compile the info for me. I hope he gets through since this is what he wants to do. I know he really did not want to do the 4 year route since he not really interested in the balance of the core academics required but...you gotta do what you gotta do!

Picong and makka allyuh blasted macco instigators go suck it nah! lol
