    Post Mother & Breadwinner Debate

    Breadwinner Moms
Mothers Are the Sole or Primary Provider in Four-in-Ten Households with Children; Public Conflicted about the Growing Trend

A record 40% of all households with children under the age of 18 include mothers who are either the sole or primary source of income for the family, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The share was just 11% in 1960.

These “breadwinner moms” are made up of two very different groups: 5.1 million (37%) are married mothers who have a higher income than their husbands, and 8.6 million (63%) are single mothers.

For the most part, I do not think a single parent household is ideal. But most single mothers (at least the ones that I've come across) didn't really have a choice in that. They HAVE to be the breadwinner because the father isn't there. As it pertains to the debate, they can't really say that the single mom being the breadwinner is detrimental to society because what are the other options?

Ok, I see what you are saying. It does seem as though the majority of single mothers did not choose it. But for purposes of understanding any affect on society, isn't it important to include them within the statistics?

lol ok it was being discussed yesterday on a media channel. Not a national debate

Anyway if you are someone who wants gender equality in the workplace in terms of salary then there will be women who earn more than men, mothers earning more than fathers. So I don't get what is big deal.

You want change but after the change you say its a problem. The mindset of the ones who are never satisfied

I just think there are more relevant issues to the single mom situation than her being the breadwinner. IMHO the things that happen leading up to her being the single mother is more relevant.

I feel like adding them into the statistics might skew it a bit.

    In a 2 parent household
Gotcha...although perhaps this could lead to a discussion about those circumstances that lead up to women becoming single mothers. It is, perhaps, somewhat simplistic to just lump all of the "breadwinning mothers" together. At least the Pew Statistics separated them...
