Cuban boxing legend returns to his roots

    Author: Ben Harrison Published: 04/23/2009

Many people consider Teofilo Stevenson, known as the Cuban giant, to be one of the greatest Olympic boxers in history.

He was born in Puerto Padre, Cuba on March 28, 1952. His father was an immigrant from St. Vincent. His mother , Dolores, was a native Cuban, but her parents were immigrants from Saint Kitts. He has numerous extended family connections here in St. Vincent, including his first cousin, Betty Davis of Biabou, who speaks of him with great pride. His last visit to St. Vincent was in 1991.

Teófilo, who began boxing when he was 14 years old, became a national hero in Cuba after winning successive gold medals in the 1972 Olympic Games of Munich and the 1976 Games in Canada. He made history by turning down a 5 million dollar offer from American promoters to turn professional and challenge World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali. Teófilo refused, asking: “What’s five million dollars worth, when I have the love of five million Cubans?”

Following his decision to retain his amateur status, Teófilo went to the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and became the second boxer ever, to win three Olympic boxing gold medals.

The Soviet Union boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, in retaliation for the United States’ boycott of the 1980 Moscow competition. Cuba followed the Soviet’s lead, and Stevenson was deprived of the chance to earn a fourth gold. He retired from boxing shortly after. During his career as a boxer, he won 301 fights out of 321.

The Republic of Cuba has always had a strong boxing tradition, having developed many professional boxers through the years. However, professional boxing was banned by Fidel Castro in Cuba in 1962, supporting the socialist philosophy to fight against the exploitation of man by man. Subsequently, many fighters left Cuba to continue their professional careers elsewhere.

Stevenson was named coach of Cuba’s amateur boxing program, and Cuban President Fidel Castro presented him with a mansion in an exclusive residential area.

In 1999, at the Miami International Airport, before boarding a United Airlines chartered jet that would take the Cuban national boxing team home, he was provoked by a torrent of verbal abuse. He allegedly head-butted and broke the teeth of a United Airlines ticket counter employee. He was arrested, but then released and allowed to return home.

Teófilo was relatively quick for a heavyweight of his size. His boxing style was described as ‘classical’ with a middle guard, a fast-hammering left and a devastating right. Unlike many large fighters, he did not hesitate to work as an in-fighter, with powerful uppercuts.

Today, Teófilo Stevenson, who speaks halting English, often accompanies Cuban teams when travelling abroad and works as a sports official in Cuba for boxing in particular. He is Vice-President of the Boxing Federation of Cuba and the National Commission of Athletes.

He lives with his wife Praymaris Arias, a lawyer and has two children, a 25-year old daughter Helmess and 14-year-old son David Alepato. Although David is now the age when Teófilo started boxing, his sports interests are swimming, cycling and surfing.

THE VINCENTIAN caught up with him for an exclusive interview at a dinner being held in his honour at the Mary Heights Hotel. Our first impression was a man who could be described as a ‘gentle giant’. When asked if he would like to send a message to the people of St. Vincent, he replied:
“ When in St. Vincent, it feels like home. My father would often talk about St. Vincent and our family here. I am very grateful to the Government and people of St. Vincent for their warm welcome. I join the Cuban people in their thinking and hope, that one day the Latin American /Caribbean region will become a reality, one country, from Rio Bravo in the north to Patagonia in the south”.
Teófilo will be visiting St. Vincent until April 27.
