    Identified

    The Kadir affair
    Informant in deposition identified
    By Wendella Davidson
The individual named as an informant in the deposition against the four alleged terror plot suspects has been identified as Terry DeSouza, a US citizen.

And the Guyanese police have since taken his maid, who used to wash his clothes, into custody for questioning.

De Souza, of stocky build and a Muslim, Anas Nabdel, reportedly told persons with whom he boarded that he was originally from the Dominican Republic, according to a source.

The men who broke their silence following the arrest of four men, three of them Guyanese, said too that De Souza left owing them $340, 000 for boarding and lodging.

The men, told the source that De Souza, when he arrived, expressed an interest in establishing a fat-pork ( a fruit in abundance in Linden) project. He was interested too in lime soap and exporting boards and staves.

The Muslim brother said it was they who took him to Linden and while there he was introduced to Kadir.

They subsequently parted ways with him after he began showing an interest in Adnan Gulshair el-Shukrijumah, a nuke phantom being targeted by the Feds and one of Osama’s henchman named in the JFK plot.

De Souza had also requested that the men accompany him to Trinidad and Tobago.

Meanwhile, Guyanese-born United States citizen Russel Mortimer De Freitas, who was held in the United States last week and is one of four persons charged by United States law enforcement officials with allegedly conspiring to blow up the John Kennedy International airport, fuel storage tanks and underground fuel pipelines, narrowly missed arrest in the US in March, 2003.

He was then one of two Guyanese, the other a prominent Guyanese woman, who had arrived at JFK aboard a North American Airlines flight from Guyana in , only to find on retrieving their baggage that there were cocaine packages inside.

In a subsequent interview with journalist Adam Harris of Prime News, Guyana, in June 2004, DeFreitas said that on arrival at JFK and on retrieving his luggage, he observed six packages which did not belong to him.

On instinct, De Freitas said he went to Immigration and explained his finding and to his astonishment when the packages were opened they all contained cocaine, weighing two kilogrammes each.

In the room, at the time was the Guyanese woman in whose luggage was found two identical packages, with similar markings and weight.

The woman was at a her wit’s end trying to convince officials at JFK that she had nothing to do with the packages, as the officials kept telling her, “All of you say that,” it was reported

It was De Freitas who saved her day as well as his.

Ironically, today, June 7, marks three years since the interview between Harris and De Freitas.

    GUYANESE TERRORIST SUSPECTS “ABSOLUTELY CRAZY”
    - President says Guyana’s image soiled
    By Neil Marks

TERROR TALK: President Bharrat Jagdeo talks with US Ambassador David Robinson at the opening of the tourism conference yesterday.

PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday described the three Guyanese implicated in the alleged terrorist plot to destroy the JFK Airport in the United States as “absolutely crazy” and said it has soiled Guyana’s image.

His comments came as stakeholders in tourism gathered at a one day conference to move the industry forward, with chairman of the Guyana Tourism Authority Brain James admitting that the GTA is “outdated” and the statistical department “seriously handicapped”.

Speaking at the opening of the conference at the Guyana international Conference Centre, Mr Jagdeo said the unveiling of the terror plot by the Guyanese “is not good” since Guyana’s future depends on the linkages with the United States. He referred to the Guyanese suspects as “crazy”, repeating “they are absolutely crazy”.

Mr. Jagdeo however refused to be drawn into questioning about the incident, saying that he would discuss it at a press conference he should host this week.

US Ambassador David Robinson told reporters that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) cooperated with local law enforcement agencies “at various stages of the investigation”.

Former opposition member of Parliament Abdul Kadir, 55, a former Guyana opposition parliamentarian, Abnel Nur, 55, and Russell DeFreitas, a U.S. citizen and native of Guyana, along with Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahim are accused of conspiring to attack the airport by planting explosives to blow up its major jet fuel tanks and pipeline.

Ambassador Robinson confirmed that the US is seeking the extradition of three of the men who are being held in Trinidad and Tobago. Kadir and Ibrahim were arrested last week in Trinidad, while DeFeritas was nabbed in the US. Nur handed in himself to authorities in Trinidad Tuesday.

Mr Jagdeo posited that Guyana cannot help but be friendly to the United States, given linkages to trade, travel, and given that “our people live there”.

Mr Jagdeo made these comments just after jokingly suggesting that Guyana should employ “dark tourism” like some countries to in luring visitors to places for which they are infamous.

Mr Jagdeo was referring to Jonestown, the now deserted communal settlement in northwestern Guyana. Guyana gained lasting international notoriety in 1978, when over 900 people committed suicide there.

While noting that “what happened recently is not good” Mr Jagdeo called on tourism stakeholders to engage in frank discussions and come up with concrete proposals for the government to assist the sector.

He said those promoting tourism here should concentrate on domestic tourism.

In addition, Mr Jagdeo said concentration should be placed as well on the people of the Caribbean who do not understand what an experience in the rainforest or across our large rivers is all about.

Mr Jagdeo said that the new hotels which sprang up in Georgetown for the hosting of Cricket World Cup 2007 were not vain investments. He said while critics wonder what will happen to the hotels, he said the investors know that they could not expect to make back their investment on this sole activity.

He said the additional rooms will help Guyana to better lobby to host international conferences. Mr Jagdeo noted that Guyana is poised to host a meeting of Commonwealth finance ministers later this year.

He said that he does not expect to see Guyana’s fortune change in dramatic ways, but this will come with time and through hard work exemplified by innovative “out of the box” ideas.

The one-day tourism conference attracted representatives of airlines, travel agencies, hoteliers, taxi services, and resorts, and boat operators.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad said that the government’s partnership with the private sector is the driving force behind the development of the sector.

He noted that while the GTA’s $65M budget for this year is not a lot of money, there are other related developments taking place across the country.

Optimistically, he said “the propaganda is over”, refferring to Guyanese who “bad mouth” their own country. He said many of them have come home and have seen the developments taking place.

The staging of the caucus is a collaborative effort among the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, GTA, and the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG).

A plan of action is expected to be drafted following discussions yesterday.

Chinese youth volunteers start one year stint

Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation, Henry Jeffrey and Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Zhang Jungao sign an agreement for the deployment of nine Chinese youth volunteers.

THE agriculture, education and health sectors here are expected to be bolstered with the help of Chinese youth volunteers.

Yesterday the Guyana and China governments, through Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation Dr. Henry Jeffery and the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Jungao signed the agreement for the dispatching of nine youth volunteers to Guyana for one year.

The volunteers, who, according to Ambassador Jungao, come from the Jiangsu Province, are the first batch of youth volunteers from China to Guyana.

The Ambassador said that the volunteers are testimony to the good relationship between the two countries. He was strong in complimenting his countrymen, whom he stated will serve Guyana well.

Today the volunteers are expected to start working in their respective fields.

In terms of education, they will tackle the Physical Education Department. Minister Jeffery pointed out that as the rest of the world, Guyana sees sports as important for the healthy development of young people. He also said that Agriculture is very important in Guyana and that any assistance in this sector is welcome.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations some 35 years ago, the Guyana and China governments have been able to expand and strengthen their bilateral relations. Guyana has benefited in terms of health and sport.

From 1992, Chinese doctors have been dispatched to Guyana biennially under the Guyana/China Medical Protocol and have served mainly at the Georgetown Hospital and the Linden Hospital Complex.

In 2004, a coaching team comprising a table tennis and Wushu (Chinese martial arts) coaches travelled to Guyana for a one year stint. The two fields were credited with coaches the following year.
