If Abortion is Legal, Why is There a Stigma Still Attached to it?

If it's a woman's choice to have an abortion and there's nothing wrong with the practice, why aren't women open to discussing their abortion history?

Some are. But everybody is entitled to privacy and to make their personal choice as to what the discuss and don't discuss.

why should they discuss it? isnt that part of their personal history? thats like a man disclosing how many women had abortions for him, whether voluntarily or involuntarily.. most wont say.

When you consider the things which are now easily discussed, abortion ought to be a shame free act.

I doubt anyone who had an abortion because of rape would feel ahow admitting it. But those who just do it for "frivolous reasons" (my term) seem to retain a sense that this is wrong.
Yes, I get what those above say, it's your business to discuss or not, but I think Opti's question goes beyond that straightforward defence.

Most people who get raped don't even report it or tell anyone, so naturally if they have an abortion as a result they probably wouldn't tell anyone that either.

Anyway, it may not be the abortion itself, but the circumstances under which it happened that may make the woman uncomfortable and unwilling to discuss. She may have had an abortion as a result of molestation, incest, infidelity or just plain wreckless stupidity and while she has a legal right to the procedure, she may not want to be judged for the actions that led her to choosing abortion.

There's a stigma attached to it because there is a stigma attached to sex in general, and this is compounded by the fact that many believe that life begins at conception and that abortion is murder. If she doesn't know your opinions on the matter, why should she tell you?

I don't know if I am wrong or everyone else is, but to me, questions like Opti's ask you to suspend the normal course of events.
So saying "Most people who get raped don't even report it or tell anyone", doesn't arise. We know that, we accept that.

The question is stigma attached to abortion, not rape. And in my opinion, if one had an abortion as a result of pregnancy by rape, and one were minded to discuss the abortion, I doubt there would be a social stigma attached. In fact I know there wouldn't be outside of those countries which aren't friendly to women.

But, I am suggesting, there is a stigma attached to those 'frivolous' abortions because the woman and the audience retain the idea that it is wrong.

Opti can clear it up, it's his thread.

    Right there with you.

The same reason a person will not discuss their personal life or health issues with just anybody. They'll discuss those matters with people close to them or those who need to know.

Same way I can't come on a message board and ask so opti how many times have you had gay sex? Gay marriage is legal in some states now, but you may have an issue with me asking that because its a personal matter and really isn't my business at all.

also abortion although legal is associated with murder in many people's minds.... so if masturbation was associated with child pornography/pedophilia... not much men would admit that they pelt a rounds or two..due to its association... nobody wants to be labeled
