Instead of giving the final lesson for the day, a Standard Four teacher was trying to calm his wards after the shooting incident on the corner of Park and Charlotte Streets in Port-of-Spain yesterday.

“Sir told all the classes around him to get down,” said a student at Rosary Boys’ RC School.

Just before the incident, the student and his friends were doing the usual while their teacher corrected their work—taking a “breeze out” by the classroom window located on the second floor of the school.

Then it turned to horror, panic and tears.

“A man with a bicycle rode up Charlotte Street and shot a man in his foot. The person who got shot pulled an old lady in front of him and she got shot,” said a student who witnessed the incident.

“Then the man rode up the hill and turned right by the big river.

“He was riding a green mountain bike, with a hopper (a mount for a passenger) in the back.”

The gunman wore a red and white shirt and a matching cap with a huge gold sticker to the front, the young boy said.

After the assailant rode off, students remained in shock.

“Some just stayed on the ground, they couldn’t get up,” the student said.

“One of the boys was crying, hiding under his desk, he wouldn’t come out. There were some boys who were helping their friends, telling them it was okay,” he said.

Yesterday’s shooting cemented the idea of relocating the Rosary Boys’ RC School, said its principal Keith ################.

“The parents and teachers have said so on many occasions. The shooting has given substance to relocating the school,” he said in a telephone interview yesterday.

“Not only because of the traffic and the unruly behaviour at the (Maraval) maxi taxi stand but there is risk involved,” he said.

################, who has been school principal for the past five years, said this was the third such incident he has witnessed. But it was the first time he has seen anyone shot.

The shooting also brought the reality of the crime situation in the country closer to home.

“It was an experience. It showed how close we are to crime,” he said.

“You could be part of the crossfire. Just before the shooting, a teacher had just left to purchase a fan on Charlotte Street. It was scary,” he said.

It also reinforced the need for parents to encourage their sons to stay within the confines of the compound rather than wait outside after school.

“If they are outside, we cannot protect them,” ################ said.

The Ministry of Education was contacted and in turn, referred the principal to the Student Services Support department.

“The officers are coming tomorrow (today) to investigate and treat the incident accordingly,” he said.
