“We have to deal with that crucially,” he said, pointing out that the number of young people in the country is too small.

“In 1992, there were 1,836 babies born in Dominica; in the year 2007, there were only 900 born in Dominica … In 20 years from 2007, there’ll only be 900 people who are 20 years old in the entire island,” Marie noted.

Marie also underscored the population imbalance has prompted the Universal Secondary Education programme.

“The reason there is Universal Secondary Education, is because there’s simply nobody else to go to the secondary schools… If those who can’t read were not there, the classes would be empty so they have to have them in school,” Marie said
Not new.. ppl been saying that for some time now there is a big gap in the age difference. Ppl just migrating from the island alot parents taking their kids and their kids starting their own families away from Da shores.

The gov need to make more opportunities in the land for the locals to stay or come back. That brain drain ting is a serious prob in truth alot of the locals go n don't return till only during reunions or island Celebrations. Dominica is one of those retirement islands. Life sweet living in a tropical paradise but most of the young ppl gone abroad to better them self in school and work build their self and their families financially alot had no choice or say in it cause their families got the op to move up here n took the kids with them. Alot of the 80's babies are abroad. If they could fix that prob wit the brain drain and provide more opportunities im sure many more would stay and come back. I never and never will turned my back on my home island never that.

^^ But it may take some of them same brain to come back and invest in the island thus "creating" opportunites. What you think about that?

Well I can tell you that just where I live, there are a lot of almost abandoned houses

And if u count how many ppl have migrated from each house, after just my street, the number will astound you..

But the thing is, its not as if here is really that bad...

sure it has its limitations, but relatively speaking we not dat bad, and d quality of life is good..

It's just the mind set that need changing...
