Economist calls for greater level of procreation in Dominica

Dominican economist McCarthy Marie says it is high time to address the “imbalance” in Dominica’s population.

Marie has for some time now been calling for greater level of procreation in Dominica to address what he says could be a very aging population in years to come.

“We have to deal with that crucially,” he said, pointing out that the number of young people in the country is too small.

“In 1992, there were 1,836 babies born in Dominica; in the year 2007, there were only 900 born in Dominica … In 20 years from 2007, there’ll only be 900 people who are 20 years old in the entire island,” Marie noted.

Marie also underscored the population imbalance has prompted the Universal Secondary Education programme.

“The reason there is Universal Secondary Education, is because there’s simply nobody else to go to the secondary schools… If those who can’t read were not there, the classes would be empty so they have to have them in school,” Marie said

This was a serious problem in a small town in Italy some years ago... got so bad the local gov't started offering to PAY people to have children. Wish I could remember the name of the village so I could see if that worked or not...

So what is the problem there then? Is it that they're not keen on having children, the men being real faithful or is there a fertility problem up there?

Yeah thats the problem. Most people of procreating age are leaving the island and where ever they land their head, that where they have their babies.

I know a lot of Dominicans who live in Antigua and most have Antiguan children. So maybe we will owe Dominica some people in time to come.

I would doubt that the issue is with fertility. If fertility is the underlying problem there would have to be some kind of island-wide exposure to reproductive toxicants. That would make an interesting study.
I think it is more an issue of migration from DOM.
