Yorke to be Tobago UK Ambassador

    Meet Dwight Yorke, the Ambassador.

Chief Secretary Orville London has announced that discussions were taking place to make the Tobago-born international football icon Tobago's Ambassador.

"This will further Tobago's marketing thrust in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world", London said at the post Executive Council media briefing last week Thursday. However, this role would be nothing new to Yorke because he was engaged by the Tobago House of Assembly at the 2009 London Travel Market to interact with visitors to the Trinidad and Tobago booth on his off days as assistant manager and midfielder with Sunderland FC.

The announcement was made as preparations were being finalised for Tobago to host its first Football World Cup qualifier on June 2 at the 7,000 seat stadium which was named after him. The Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warriors will come up against Costa Rica of Central America.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation has reserved 2,000 tickets for purchase by Tobagonians who wish to see their football hero playing his first such match on his home soil. The remaining 5,000 tickets that were on sale on line went on the first day last week Monday. The cost of the tickets: $200 for uncovered stands and $400 for covered.

The Tobago House of Assembly which is putting up $.5 million to host the match here is currently finalising special arrangements for the sale of the tickets at a central location.

Yorke is returning to the national team following a two-match ban imposed on him by FIFA following an after match incident with the referee in the Soca Warriors qualifier against Honduras. He was original banned for four matches but the penalty was reduced to two after hearing an appeal from the local football federation.

Infrastructural work in preparation for the match is also continuing, according to London.

He said the hosting of the match was a tribute to the son of the soil who will resume captaincy of the team.
As part of its tribute to the football icon, the Assembly has been in discussions with Yorke to host the Dwight Yorke Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament from June 17 to 20 at the Plantations Golf Course, Lowlands. Eighteen celebrities including Andy Cole, David Platt, and Michael Owen, will participate at the tournament, the Chief Secretary said. The Port Authority has scheduled a special sailing time of the T&T Spirit from Port of Spain at 2 p.m. on June 6 to arrive in Scarborough well in time for the 6.05 p.m. start of the match.

The T&T Express sails at 8.30 a.m. from Port of Spain on match day. Caribbean Airlines is also putting on additional return flights to accommodate Trinidad football fans who wish to see the match and return home the same night.
