Somebody please remind me when this is out! Big fan of horror and especially Caribbean folklore...one of my favorite books is from Nalo Hopkinson is Skin Folk...lawd I would turn on every light in the house when I read it

    Overview Skin Folk
A new collection of short stories from Hopkinson, including "Greedy Choke Puppy," which Africana.com called "a cleverly crafted West Indian story featuring the appearance of both the soucouyant (vampire) & lagahoo (werewolf)," "Ganger (Ball Lightning)," praised by the Washington Post Book World as written in "prose [that] is vivid & immediate," this collection reveals Hopkinson's breadth & accomplishments as a storyteller.

chattin with my El Salvadorian coworkers yesterday and somehow topic turned to folk stories and they started telling me about "El Cipitio"...I swear I think I stopped breathing when they started to describe what it was...

    "El Cipitio"

"El Cipitio" is a legendary character found in Salvadoran folklore. He is generally portrayed as a 10 year old boy with a big hat and a large belly. His name is taken from the Nahuatl word for child: "Cipit" or "Cipote". Some also relate his name to the deity Xipe Totec.

According to the legend, he is the son of a forbidden romance between an indigenous queen called Sihuehuet or Ziquet, now commonly known as La Siguanaba, and "Lucero de la mańana" (Spanish for morningstar). Cipitio is the child of this affair. When Ziguet's husband found out about this affair he sought the assistance of the very powerful god Teotl. Ziguet and Cipitio were cursed and condemned by Teotl. Cipitio was going tolive forever as a 10 year old boy with his feet in backwards position, as a reminder of the twisted and illicit affair of his parents. Stories are told of farmers that come to their fields and find the footsteps of a boy,but eventually get lost following them because, not knowing that Cipitio has his feet backwards, they follow them in the wrong direction.

Cipitio is represented as liking to eat ashes, throwing pebbles to beautiful ladies, and likes to eat a variety of banana called "Guineo Majoncho". He could also "Teleport" anywhere he wants.
