Dominican Republic Poised to Become the New 'Hollywood' of Latin America

The DR’s new Cinema Law will support domestic producers, distributors and exhibitors and promote international investment in film production in the country by offering both economic incentives and an attractive location for foreign films.

Here is an article written by filmmaker Jasbinder Singh Mann, about his experience living in Dominican Republic and what are his expectations for the film industry in DR:

    - Boasts a variety of very diverse and stunning locations: beaches, coastal areas, desert, tropical forests and historical port and city

    -Culturally buzzing capital, Santo Domingo

    - As the leading economy in the Caribbean, it offers foreign companies and visitors the opportunity to enjoy an ideal environment for both work and play

    - Between 6 and 10 (27 this year) feature films are made in the Dominican Republic every year, and it proves a well-established industry of local and foreign productions.

    - The most cost effective location for filming in the region

    - Favourable exchange rate to the US dollar

    - Fully transferable tax credit

    - Close proximity and access to Caribbean, Central and South American markets

    - 10 International airports with over 200 scheduled flights each week to America and Europe

    - Feature film credits include: Havana (Sydney Pollack); The Lost City (Andy Garcia), The Godfather: Part II (Francis Ford Coppola), The Good Shepherd (Robert de Niro), and Miami Vice (Michael Mann)

There are other major projects in planning, for example:

Financial center San Souci, in Santo Domingo... This this mega financial center will provide nearly 2% of GDP (still under construction).

Arquitexto » Sansouci: un proyecto de ciudad

The Independent Financial Centre of the Americas (It is shaping up to be the most important of the hemisphere).

Independent Financial Centre of the Americas

Extrme Park Punta Cana, in Punta Cana, DR. It is an amusement park with various attractions, including a roller coaster & Indoor ski slope ( Still under construction)

High Speed Rail (Still in its first stage, the feasibility studies are ready. It will be put into operation before 2020). In its first phase, Santo Domingo city (in the south region) will be connected to Santiago city (in the north), in the second stage, the east coast will be connected to the capital city.

I tip my hat to this project, I ask what is the purpose and intentions of the Independent Financial Centre of The America?Seems like a lot is vested in this.

Sure... The Dominican Republic has launched a strategic plan to triple the the electrical energy we produced today, both renewable and conventional energy. Also, Most of the largest employers/companies in Dominican Republic produce their own electricity. Even the Santo Domingo Metro has its own generators.

    Some renewable energy projects.

These eolian parks are only 2 of the 6 that are in plan for 2016.

As for solar energy, well ... Dominican Republic has been producing solar power for years, but is just now when the government gets involved in the market seriously.

Solar power plant in the province of Monte Plata.

Isofotón - Solar panel factory in DR to start producing this year.

And lets not forget the dams, the dams are expected to contribute more than 50% of the electrical energy produced in the Dominican Republic by the end of present year.

Two of the biggest dams in the Caribbean & Latin America.

Dominican Republic has 18 dams, half of them produce electrical energy. As a country with few energy resources such as gas or oil, a national goal in recent years has been to find alternative energy solutions such as natural gas and wind and solar power, but the goal is not just energetic self-sufficiency, our goal goes far beyond (even though we do not have vast oil reserves) we have decided to become the leading producer of electricity in caribbean and the surplus energy will be sold to Haiti and other Caribbean islands.

So yeah, the electric power is very important and the government is taking it very seriously.

The Independent Financial Centre of the Americas is a purpose built 21st Century financial city and trading platform. Privately owned and built on a green-field site half the size of Manhattan, the Centre follows a technologically advanced blueprint refined over years of rigorous research, deliberately fashioned to generate value for its tenants within a new jurisdiction that ensures effective and positive regulation.

Honestly, I do not think that those conferences are going to bring a lot of investment in electricity to our islands.

Well, maybe for small islands, for large islands that does not make much difference. Look, I'll give you an example so you can understand. In 2012 the Dominican Republic received about 60% of all the Foreign Investment in the Caribbean... And even with all the investments coming to DR, the Dominican GDP grew only 3.5% that year.
