Dominican Republic company takes over breweries in Eastern Caribbean

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC - The Dominican Republic–based Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana (CND) company has signed a US$31 million agreement to take over controlling shares in four indigenous breweries in the Eastern Caribbean.

CDN said that the agreement would allow it to acquire 76.5 per cent of St. Vincent Brewery Limited, 93 per cent of Antigua Brewery Limited, 75 per cent of Antigua PET Plant and 58 per cent of the Dominica Brewery and Beverages Limited.

“Furthermore an agreement has been made with CND for license production of all Unibrew’s Vita Malt brands, which will result in Vita Malt gaining grounds in the region,” said Technical Manager of the Dominica Brewery and Beverages Limited, Kurt Ikanshink.

He said the transaction is expected to be finalised by yearend “and is not expected to affect the group’s earning in 2009”.

Unibrew is the second largest brewery group in Denmark, selling under the brands Ceres, Faxe and Albani, although their best selling beer is marketed as Royal. It also brews and markets Heineken Denmark.

CND said that the companies involved are leaders in their respective markets and produce popular brands such as Wadadli and Kubuli Beer in Antigua and Dominica respectively.

“The acquisition strengthens CND’s position as a regional producer in the Caribbean. In addition CND will continue to develop its operations,” the company said.
