Smile Does Having An Accent Help You or Hurt You?

Some people in America say that having an accent actually is more appealing than not having one. I have a friend who absolutely loves the way people in the Caribbean speak--she imitates them when she's talking at times.

Depending on the accent, the feeling is that it's much sexier to have an accent when meeting the opposite sex.

There are some people that think having an accent gives one more of a cosmopolitan flair while some who actually have thick accents from various cultures around the world say that people judge them because of their accent.

If you have an accent does it open doors for you?--particularly in social circles?

    What's your opinion?

I think it depends on "where" the accent is from. I used to work for a large Insurance company and there were a lot of East Indians working there...sometimes it was hard to understand them. However, having a British(not Cockney)accent is considered a plus.

    Go figure...

I think it can work both ways. Those who can lose an accent when
necessary and use an accent when advantageous are in the best position.

My parents retired to a small town on Maryland's eastern shore named Berlin.
Most people from outside are area pronounce it like the German city, burr-lin.
The local pronunciation is berl-inn. If you get pulled over for speeding and
say you're visiting your parents in berl-inn, you are much likely to get a warning instead of a ticket.

I agree with you on the first part of your comment.

Down south, there are a lot of accents. All southerners don't talk the same--it varies, and the way we speak can be quaint and charming at times, other times, it can be downright annoying.

I'm sure the colloquialisms trip Americans from the north and foreigners alike, out.
