Do you think marriage is becoming obsolete?

I say about 20 years from now marriage will not be a serious consideration for majority of people

Is marriage becoming obsolete? - CNN

According to a TIME/Pew research poll released last week, 40 percent of Americans believe that marriage is becoming obsolete, up from just 28 percent in 1978.
But as an institution that regulates people's lives, marriage is no longer the social and economic necessity it once was. People can construct successful lives outside marriage in ways that would have been very difficult to manage 50 years ago, and they have a far greater range of choices about whether to marry, when to marry, and how to organize their marriages.

This often makes them more cautious in committing to marriage and more picky about their partners than people were in the past.

Not really. It is becoming obsolete for numerous people but it is still very much an important institution for plenty others.

More people are becoming very cautious when it comes to mariage. The older generations had the mentality that marriage was just part of life and almost mandatory, but today the younger generations have a more realistic view of marriage , knowing it can regulate your life and its not a necessity.

Back in the days "mostly" men were scared to death of marriage, women of today is just as equally scared. I think most people wonder about the ramifications of marriage rather than marital bliss, Marriage is very easy to get in but a pain in the neck to get out. IMO

    Satan strong.

People become brainwashed by icons of our time and their loose morals (Kardashians, Lil Wayne, Nikki Minaj, Jersey Shore, etc.).

The yutes ( and adults ) have decided that it's more important to have tons of sex than to be in a relationship, and the word abstinence and the sanctity of marriage or a relationship is nowhere to be found these days.

Commitment to a woman and treating her like how Bill Huxtable treated Clair has been replaced with cheating on every person you're with and treating a woman like how Lil Wayne treats his 'hoes'.

The problem with this is, as fewer and fewer people get married and have children, Western society is going to have great problems maintaining its institutions and standards of living. Without young people, there won't be enough people left to care for the old and sick, as well as perform enough labour to keep money flowing in the economy. Places like Germany and Japan are already feeling the pressure to bring up birthrates, and without success they'll soon slip into decline.

"Feminism" and "Girl Power" are responsible for the waning presence of marriage in western society.

Wait a minute what data do you have to prove that western civilizations will have less children due to less marriages? Growing number of people today don't feel you need to be married to have kids

So, women can't be cautious about "taking the leap" of marriage? Men have been having cold feet for the longest. Why can't women? I'm agreeing with notorious on this one. This is coming from somebody who is married. Out of the choices in my life getting married was the hardest. It wasn't about me losing my freedom because that comes with a commitment. It was about making sure that I picked somebody who is on the same wavelength. Women have options, and that's what feminism taught me (not sure about everyone else).

How many men will be willing to marry women who model and follow these women on "jersey Shore" or "Basketball wives"..How many men will take that risk ?...

Also men today (unike men of older generations) are less naive when it comes to "women infidelity" so men themselves are more cautious about being married.

It's all over the place. Population growth in other western countries is already either negative or approaching zero, and most of the growth that does exist is fed by recent immigrants, who tend to be much more family oriented. Look at the UK. 85% of Britains are ethnic White British but only 65% of babies born there are White British. Blacks in the US have the lowest marriage rates but the highest abortion rates. In many of the most industrialised nations in Europe and Asia the government has to PAY people to have kids because the population levels are so dangerously low that a demographic collapse will be imminent in the next few generations.

It IS true that a growing number of people today don't feel they need to be married to have kids, but at the same time people who are not willing to put effort into settling down and getting married are generally not gonna be willing to put the even GREATER investment of time and money into caring for a child, especially if they've got to do it alone. Aside from that, many of the reasons why people defer having children, such as education or financial instability, result in people waiting well into their late 30's, when by then it's far more difficult to even conceive. There IS less of a stigma against out-of wedlock children but that doesn't mean most people really favour it or would do it themselves if put in that position.
