They are not and have never been mutually exclusive of each other. Most stereotypes are applied from a generalized point of view, so not sure what exactly you have issue with that I said.

to answer teh question.. in every group there are folks that DEFY the stereotype but in a lot of strereotypes there's truth.. people take traits/mannerisms that are seen in a group of people and extrapolate it to label ALL members of that group.. like for exammple, all mexicans work in the back of restaurants.. or ALL chinese folks are short... when the mexican billionaire and Yao ming show that to not be the case.. sure there are lots of mexicans workin in restaurants or lots of short chinee people but is not ALL..

yes it's wrong to stereotype. each person shud have a chance to show who they are as an individual and treated accordingly.
but i think stereotypes are formed based on pieces of the truth and sometimes statistics. so (example) if there are a lot of convicted felons that are black the stereotype would be projected that if u see a black person more than likely they can be a felon rather than giving individuals a fair chance from the start to show that they are innocent until proven guilty.
