    Unhappy Cop killed in T&T.

    COP SHOT DEAD

A POLICE constable who attempted to foil a robbery at a fruit stall in Arima was shot and killed by the robber yesterday but hours later, cops killed the robber in an alleged shoot-out.

PC Elton John, 26, died of gunshot injuries while being treated at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex around 5 a.m. yesterday. Hours after the incident, a man identified as the suspect who killed John was shot dead during an alleged exchange of gunfire with police in Carapo.

Officers, acting on information, said they intercepted a vehicle at 100 Acres and the suspects opened fire on them, causing them to return fire.

Wendell Daniel was hit and taken to the Arima District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Sunday Express understands up to late yesterday, a manhunt was underway for another suspect who jumped out of the vehicle and escaped in some nearby bushes.

John, relatives said, was shot in the forehead, stomach and abdomen by a man who pulled out a gun and attempted to rob a fruit vendor.

At John’s home in Phase Five, La Horquetta, yesterday, relatives were unable to come to terms with the untimely incident, which they said have shattered their lives.

His wife, Latisha Candice Mc Intosh, 22, said John died as a hero. “He did what he liked doing...protecting life, and he’s my biggest hero,” she said as she clutched their eight-month-old baby boy, Joesiah John, in her arms as the couple’s three-year-old daughter, Brittney, looked on. John, a constable for the past seven years, was last assigned to the Tunapuna Police Station. He was scheduled to report for duty last night. McIntosh described John as the most loving man anyone could have ever met. She said in their community, he devoted himself as a peacemaker in disputes among residents.

“He could sometimes be miserable. But he always have everybody laughing and have a story to tell. I mean, everybody loved him. He had no enemies,” McIntosh said.

She added, despite the fact John lived a few houses away from hers, he always made it his business to take care of his family. She said, “He’s always here, coming and looking for his children. I would miss his company because he’s always here.

“No breadwinner again. She’s [Brittney] supposed to start school in September and he [Joesiah] ain’t christen as yet, so I guess I am on my own now. He [John] always provided for his family, and once he sees somebody fighting, he would always go and part it.”

McIntosh added John was always dedicated to duty and would be missed by all who knew him.

Police reported shortly after 11.p.m. on Friday, John was purchasing fruits from a vendor when he observed a suspect standing behind a tree with a bulge in his waist.

John, police said, challenged the suspect, who drew a gun from his waist and pointed it at the off-duty cop.

John placed his hands into the air and began to speak with the suspect. He managed to snatch the gun, and a struggle ensued. The suspect took control of the weapon and shot the officer three times about the body before fleeing on foot.

Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert was among the officers who visited the scene yesterday morning. Attempts to reach Philbert for a comment on the incident proved futile.

Head of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social Welfare Association Sgt Anand Ramesar said his organisation would renew a call to issue firearms to officers while off duty.

Ramesar and other police officers visited John’s relatives yesterday. Snr Supt Ramsubhag, ASP Hendron Moses, Sgts Kirt Samuel, Baptiste, Simon and Cpls Jerry and Dollaway all visited the scene. Simon, of the Region II Homicide Bureau of Investigations, is probing the matter.

Autopsies are expected to be conducted on the bodies of John and Daniel tomorrow at the Forensic Science Centre.

    that's a horrible story.
"Giving up is hard to do
    When you really love someone
Giving up .... so hard to do
    When you still depend upon
    Her warm and tender touch
Her kiss and her hug..........her caress
Oooooh that used to mean so much
    And bring you happiness"
