    Crime Stoppers launches new website
By INDARJIT SEURAJ Thursday, November 19 2009

A WEBSITE identifying most wanted men from countries across the region is the latest crime fighting initiative which is hoped would lead to arrests. The TT Crime Stoppers on Tuesday evening formally launched the Crimestoppers #### Most Wanted website, dedicated to making mug shots and sketches of criminals throughout the region, available for the public in the hope that they could assist police in the apprehension of these criminals.

Interviewed after the launch, at the Maracas meeting room of the Courtyard Marriott, acting Police Commissioner James Philbert told reporters he was looking forward to the “Most Wanted” initiative in the fight against crime.

“It is excellent. It provides an opportunity for everything we have been struggling with, in terms of assistance from the public,” Philbert said. He said the initiative also brings the opportunity for the Police Service to work on public trust, something they have also been struggling with.

The police, he said, would do its part to make the crime measure work.“As a matter of fact, we want to crowd it, load as many faces as possible,” he said.

The website was funded by BCB Holdings Ltd, a financial institution based in Belize. At a cost of $300,000., the website will network the Crime Stopper agencies and TT Police Service, Belize, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos.

United Kingdom politician Lord Michael Ashcroft, head of Crime Stoppers UK, who helped formally launch the regional website, said the networking idea was a means of ensuring criminals are held.

“With ‘Most Wanted’ there is no hiding,” he said.
