Reporters attacked by parents of CAPE culprits

PHOTOGRAPHERS and reporters were yesterday verbally and physically attacked by the parents of one of two teenagers sentenced to community service for having the Communication Studies paper for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) before the examinations.

The drama unfolded after 1 p.m. when Scott Joseph and Nyron Toney left a probation officer's office at the Tunapuna Magistrates' court.

As photographers tried to get photos of the duo, who had their faces covered with handkerchiefs at first, the melee began.

The abuse first began with Joseph's mother telling photographers to take a picture of "real criminals" and leave the youngsters alone.

However, the tempo of the abuse raised dramatically as Joseph's father ran into Express photographer Jermaine Cruickshank in an attempt to grab his camera.

At this point the two teenagers and Toney's mother were looking on in disbelief at the physical assault.

Joseph's father then attempted to slap away the camera of Newsday photographer Azlan Mohammed.

All the while during the attack, Joseph's father threatened all media personnel present about what he would to them if he caught them alone.

The fracas caused motorists and pedestrians moving along the Eastern Main Road to stop and watch.

The group of six, which included the two teenagers, Joseph's parents and uncle and Toney's mother, then left.

However, the attack did not end there.

Minutes later as the media stood at the eastern side of the Magistrates court speaking about the unprovoked assault, Joseph's father returned driving a truck.

Firstly, he tried to knock down Newsday Court reporter Indarjit Seuraj, then withdrew a wheel spanner from beneath his car seat and cursed and threatened the group of media personnel again.

Earlier, during sentencing, the two 18-year-old St Augustine Community College pupils were made to apologise to their parents for all the embarrassment caused.

Magistrate Adrian Darmanie eventually sentenced the duo to 100 hours community service and a year of supervised probation.

The ruling effectively saves the teenagers from a maximum penalty of $1,000 and six-months in prison under the CXC Act which was used to charge them.

And if a conviction was recorded the duo may have also been barred from writing any CAPE examinations for five years.

After the community service is served, Darmanie said the duo can have their slate wiped clean by applying an order to vacate the conviction.

Toney, an aspiring accountant, apologised to his mother, while Joseph, an aspiring civil engineer, were arrested in May, days after writing the Communication Studies exam which had been leaked before the official examination date. Toney was held at his Chaguanas home by Fraud Squad detective Acting Sgt Gilbert Kennedy on May 13.

Speaking to reporters Yaseen Ali the duo's attorney said his clients sentencing was "quite fair".
