Owned by a private company, with the public having shares in it... when we say the company is publicly owned, it's not that the whole public owns it, but shares and exquity is available to the public, so yes, they have some sort of ownership in it....

    understand now???

coca cola is one of them, as well as many other blue stock companies...

First thing that came to mind was Quasi-Goverment which is a government owned company managed privately.

A company can not be public and private at the same time, by definition and legal registration. When a company registers, it has to state whether it will be doing business as a partnership, sole proprietor, corporation, s-corp, etc.

The other possibility that came to mind is a private llc who raised capital from the general public but maintained the number of shareholders under the limit of having to go public. I think they would still be considered a private llc here. Typically in a private llc shareholders are selected, and if you want to sell your ownership you have to get approval from the other shareholders. So in this example you can say that it is publicly held if they raised capital from outsiders(the general public). Sort of like a credit union, its a private company but shares are publicly owned.

I think that's an unofficial terminology. I would say that there is not such thing. I hope I didn't contradict myself too much.
