Man shot dead, teen son critical
By ANNA LISA PAUL and ALEXANDER BRUZUAL Wednesday, June 15 2011

A DIEGO Martin man was shot dead and his teenaged son critically wounded yesterday when a gunman, who reportedly disguised himself by wearing a school uniform, fired several shots at the father and son as they sat in a car near the Diego Martin North Secondary School.

While Western Division police were last night continuing their investigations, schoolboy Raheem Gillard, 14, was warded in critical condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. His father Dexter “Sugars” Gillard, at the same time, was lying in the morgue.

According to a police report, at about 2.30 pm, Gillard was seated in his car in a car-park near to his son’s school. He was waiting to pick up his son, something he usually did every afternoon during the week.

Eyewitnesses said the Form Two student had just gotten into his father’s car when a gunman, who according to Gillard’s relatives, was dressed in school clothing, walked up to the car and fired several times hitting both father and son. The gunman then ran off. As other students, their parents, teachers and pedestrians scampered for safety as the gunshots rang out, a call was made to the West End Police station.

Officers who arrived quickly at the scene, rushed Gillard and his son to hospital. Gillard was pronounced dead-on-arrival while his son received emergency treatment.

While admitting that they did not have a motive for the brutal attack police sources assured last night that they are working on several leads. No arrest has been made. An autopsy will be done today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

At the house of mourning at La Puerta, Diego Martin last evening, friends had gathered to lend support to his family.

The relatives, who asked not to be identified citing security concerns, said Gillard’s killing and the shooting of his son, were tragic and unbearable. “He was a normal and down to earth person but more than that he was a peacemaker. He was not perfect and had his issues like anyone else, but he was always doing his best to help others and trying to quell violence in the area. I don’t know...like people no longer like peace in this country anymore,” said a female relative.

Family members said they were told by witnesses that the gunman was dressed in a school uniform. “Just imagine that. He dressed up like a student and waited among real schoolchildren for the school day to end. That man does not care at all for anyone. Somebody else’s child could have been killed in the attack,” the relative said. Other relatives said they would spend the night praying for Raheem to pull through as doctors informed them that his condition is grim as he lost a lot of blood.

Relatives told Newsday that ever since Gillard’s stepson Amiel George was stabbed to death on January 18, 2010 in Cocorite, Gillard started picking up his son Raheem from school. Investigations are continuing.

'Sugars' was no criminal, says family

'Sugars' was no criminal, says family

(Story Updated: Jun 15, 2011 at 10:43 PM ECT )

Relatives of Dexter "Sugars" Gillard, 40, who was gunned down outside the Diego Martin North Secondary School yesterday disputed police reports that Gillard was involved in criminal activity.

Gillard's, son Abiel Julien, 14, who was also shot in the attack, remained in critical condition at the Port of Spain General Hospital up to press time last night.

Around 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday, Gillard and Julien were seated in Gillard's gold coloured Nissan Almera outside the school, waiting for two other pupils, when two men wearing school uniforms, approached the car and opened fire. Both father and son were shot.

Gillard died while undergoing surgery at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Officials at the school said that would not be able to comment on the issue yesterday. The Express was reliably informed that several guidance counsellors were sent to the school in a bid to counsel the students who witnessed the attack.

According to Gillard's sister-in-law, who refused to give her name, "He (Gillard) may not have been perfect but he was a good father and he was a man that tried to help others. He tried to help people and keep the peace in his community but no one likes peacemakers and everyone has enemies even priests."

She along with eight other relatives, mostly women, were at the Forensic Science Centre, in St James yesterday, where an autopsy was done on Gillard's body.

Police yesterday however maintained that Gillard was, "well known to them".

Last week, Gillard was granted bail in the Port of Spain Magistrates' court following his arrest for the possession of a military issued bullet-proof vest.

The police also said that he was wanted for several shooting and robbery charges but due to lack of evidence he was not arrested and charged for those crimes.

Nobody is going to go thru the trouble of dressing in a school uniform to ambush you..not for robbery anyway, which was not the case in this situation.
